Obviously, the more we know about our travel companions, the better we can customize and improve their experience. As we plan your trip, we will ask you for personal information (some mandatory, some optional); in turn, we promise to protect this information and ensure that it remains confidential. We also promise never to sell your information to anyone.&nbsp;<h2>What We Ask For &amp; Why</h2>You can purchase a trip or make a reservation by contacting our Travel Advisors, or by visiting our website. At that time, we will ask you to provide some basic information (such as your name, phone number and credit card number and expiration date) so that we can identify you, follow up with you and process your purchase. We may also require your gender and age for identification purposes. However, we may need more information than is required for a standard travel booking, as we strive to offer an unparalleled level of customized service. Below is a description of some of the extra information we may require:&nbsp;<h4>Dietary Requirements</h4>We understand that many people prefer or are required to follow certain diets. We try to accommodate these choices and needs whenever possible. To accomplish this, your dietary preferences must be recorded in your booking. This information is then transferred to your B&amp;R guides, who will in turn contact the various restaurants and hotels to ensure that your requirements can be met.&nbsp;<h4>Physical and Health Details</h4>We need to obtain information about your age, gender, height and general health so that we can provide you with the appropriate equipment and ensure your personal health and safety. We may also request your COVID-19 vaccination status, date and type, which may determine your access to services and experiences based on local law and inform the design of your trip.&nbsp;<h4>Flight and Passport Information</h4>We request your flight information in order to provide you with any necessary airport pick-up or drop-off services and/or to ensure that you will have adequate time to get to the airport for your flights home. For some trips, we request passport information because it is required by our local service providers (e.g. a hotel or a ship) or to facilitate your further transportation while on a B&amp;R trip.&nbsp;<h4>Personal Preferences</h4>B&amp;R constantly strives to provide you with the highest level of personal service. Our Travel Advisors record any special requests or preferences that are specified at the time of your booking. This information is passed on to your guides and enables the guides to meet and exceed all of your expectations. Also, our guides may pass on information about special requests or preferences expressed by travellers while on a trip. We maintain a record of this information to ensure that on subsequent trips these personal preferences continue to be accommodated. We also keep a record of past trips you have taken with us, which allows us to understand the type of activities or trips you prefer and to determine what information (i.e. about new or revised trips) you might find interesting.&nbsp;<h2>The&nbsp;Slow Road&nbsp;e-mail newsletter</h2>B&amp;R’s e-mail newsletter provides regular updates and articles about B&amp;R trips. To sign up for this service, we ask that you provide us with your name and your e-mail address. You may unsubscribe at any time by using the link provided on every newsletter.&nbsp;<h2>Information Use</h2>Brochures:&nbsp;We use your address information and personal preference details to mail you select B&amp;R brochures. Can I insure additional travel costs not included in the Butterfield & Robinson trip? 

Pre-existing Medical Condition Exclusions would likely be applicable to a condition of a traveller, travelling companion or family member who was first diagnosed, had a change in diagnosis or required a change in medication during the 90 day look back period immediately preceding and including the effective date of coverage. To include a Pre-existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver, you must purchase your plan within 15 days of your final trip payment.&nbsp;

What do I need to know about pre-existing medical conditions, and how can I ensure I’m covered for them?

What is the cost of the insurance? 

No, Cavalry Travel Protection allows you to insure your trip as you pay your trip deposits. If you&nbsp;choose, you can insure your initial trip deposit, and then insure your additional trip payments as they are made.&nbsp;

Do I have to insure my entire trip when I make my initial trip deposit?

You may cancel your policy for a full refund within 10 days of purchase, as long as you have not departed for the trip, and no claim has been filed.&nbsp;

What if I change my mind after purchasing insurance? 

You have 15 days from date of increase to top up your insured amount to maintain your early purchase benefits.&nbsp;

Cancel For Any Reason - What if my trip cost increases after purchasing within 15 days? 

Yes, you may still purchase Cavalry Travel Protection at any time, however, you are not eligible for the optional CFAR upgrade (this must be purchased within 15 days of your first deposit).

B&R’s trips are carbon neutral. Here’s what that means for our travellers

Starting with our 2023 season, every B&amp;R trip taken is carbon neutral. This is an ongoing commitment and an integral part of our commitment to be Net Zero by 2050. Here’s how the process works and how travellers can contribute.&nbsp;

To get to Net Zero, an organization must reduce carbon emissions by more than 90% from its base year of measurement, off-setting anything that cannot be eliminated. B&amp;R’s base year is 2023, and during that year our emissions were 2,176 metric tons (MT).&nbsp; &nbsp;While we are on a journey to reach this goal by 2050, charting a path to Net Zero involves having to predict the future and how quickly low-carbon technologies will become viable within the business. However, we do not want to use this as an excuse to not start reducing emissions immediately.&nbsp;

What is Net Zero? 

B&amp;R has partnered with carbon consulting firm <a href="https://www.ecollectivecarbon.com/">e-Collective</a> to calculate the total carbon footprint of our company, including each trip we run. Trip emission calculations include accommodation, in-region transportation, meals, activities for both travellers and our guides. Of our total carbon footprint in 2023, 1,791 MT were trip emissions. This is the equivalent to the electricity usage of 1,455 Canadian homes per year.

How are B&R’s emissions calculated? 

To offset is to roughly quantify carbon emissions and buy offsets from a third party to “neutralize” them. B&amp;R has partnered with Sustainable Travel International, an expert in climate change impact and mitigation, to purchase carbon offsets that match the total emissions produced by our trips.&nbsp; &nbsp;The dollars we invest via offsetting are distributed across a portfolio of STI-verified climate projects. These projects fight climate change by removing greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere or avoiding emissions that would otherwise happen.&nbsp;

How does offsetting work?  

STI’s verified climate projects fight climate change by removing greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere or avoiding emissions that would otherwise happen. Examples of the project we’re investing in include Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, a Cambodian forestry project that protects over 412,000 acres of tropical forest, and the Katingan Mentaya Project, which is protecting and restoring over 370,000 acres of carbon-rich peat swamp forest in Borneo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

How do STI’s projects work? 

Offsetting is just one part of our strategy. We are reducing emissions, which includes designing routes that minimize unnecessary gas-powered travel and reducing waste and single-use plastics. We are also insetting, or investing in our operations and supply chain in ways that will help reduce emissions; and regenerating through our Slow Fund, with projects that support biodiversity conservation and environmental protection. What else is B&R doing to minimize emissions? 

B&amp;R contributes approximately 5% of our annual profits to Slow Fund projects around the world, which means every time you travel with us, you are part of that impact. And on every trip you book with us, we recommend that you book direct flights to your destination whenever possible and <a href="https://sustainabletravel.org/our-work/carbon-offsets/calculate-footprint/?external-id89791&amp;source=B-R&amp;source-client=&amp;carbon=&amp;amount=&amp;currency=USD">offset your flights</a>. These two things are among the most significant impacts travellers can make.&nbsp;

As hotel pricing is always based on the cost of two people sharing a room, there’s an extra charge if you’d prefer to reserve a room for private use. This price also varies based on the hotel and season. We love welcoming solo travellers, to always keep this priced as low and fair as we can. Please reach out to your Travel Advisor if you have any questions. &nbsp;

What is a 'single supplement' on Small Group trips?

Yes! We love when groups of friends Privatize one of our Small Group trips. For groups of eight or more, you can take over a full itinerary. Simply reserve your date online or get in touch with one of our Travel Advisors. Please note that pricing varies depending on group size.

I have a group of friends I want to travel privately with, but like one of your Small Group itineraries. Can I buy-out one of the dates?  

We love inspiring children through travel, but as with all we do, we want it to be well thought out and designed to suit. That’s why we reserve our regular trips for adults 18 and over. &nbsp;

Those choosing to travel with us should do so with the mindset that things might not play out exactly as planned, meaning potential alterations to events, meals, lodging, transportation and activities. Health & Safety

We will endeavour to notify you of trip-specific health guidelines before your departure. Depending on regional entry requirements, you may need to provide proof of medical tests, proof of current vaccinations, proof of medical insurance and/or other government-required forms. It is imperative that you arrive at your destination armed with this information. We cannot stress enough the importance of this. If you fail to comply with local health Rules and Regulations, you may be refused entry to the region and be unable to participate in your trip.It is your responsibility to be aware of and to comply with all such requirements and laws. The rules change quickly and often–continue to inform yourself right up to and during your trip.It remains the responsibility of each traveller to (i) carry and provide to local authorities and service providers such proof of vaccination, proof of medical testing, proof of medical insurance and all other government-mandated forms required by local authorities in the country(ies) of destination; and (ii) to ensure that they have the appropriate travel documents related to this trip for their nationality. B&amp;R is not liable for any expenses or costs arising from any traveller being prohibited from entering a country scheduled to be visited on a trip.

Before your trip

In the event that you are required to quarantine unexpectedly, we recommend including extra medication and other necessities in your carry-on to cover an additional 14 days or such longer period of quarantine as may be imposed by local authorities.

We strongly recommend all our travellers purchase travel insurance. Now more than ever, it is important to be covered should you need to leave your trip due to injury or infection. B&amp;R offers coverage through Cavalry Insurance. A summary of the Cavalry Elite cancellation and medical insurance will be included with your confirmation package and can be found <a href="https://redpointtravelprotection.com/plan/cavalry/?butterfield%22%20\\t%20%22_blank%22%20\t%20%22_blank">here </a> or by request.

Any traveller with a positive COVID-19 test result will be required to follow all local health protocols. We will do our best to assist you, however, any costs associated with cancellations, delays or medical needs are your responsibility. &nbsp;For the safety of the rest of the group, our Guides, partners and suppliers, any travellers with a positive COVID-19 test who refuses to follow local protocols may be asked to leave the trip.

On your trip

To keep your group, your Guides and the communities you visit safe, we ask that you kindly follow all local health protocols and regulations where you travel. If you are unable to do so, you may be required to leave your trip. Local guidelines may include (but are not limited to):<ul><li>Masks/PPE</li><li>Maintaining physical distance</li><li>Hand washing and sanitizing</li><li>COVID-19 tests for suspected exposure</li><li>Required self-isolation and/or quarantine&nbsp;</li></ul>

If you are travelling with children, please ensure they follow local health protocols. If they are unable to do so, both you and your children may be required to leave your trip.

Due to health and safety concerns, B&amp;R may, at its discretion, need to modify your trip and its activities. These modifications would be as necessary to keep your group and Guides safe while on the road. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.Once a trip is on the road, we have fully committed to all payments (hotels, local guides, restaurants, transfers etc.) and therefore will not refund travellers should their trip be cut short or altered due to illness, failure to comply with local health protocols, or any other reason.

The art of slow travel with Butterfield & Robinson

It all started in 1966 with a few friends, a shared thirst for adventure, and (of course) a bottle of wine. That first trip—hiking and cycling through Europe—wasn’t just a journey, it was a revelation. Nearly 60 years later, the spirit of it still guides us. We’ve spent decades crafting exceptional active travel experiences for those who believe the best adventures happen when you don’t just dip your toe in the water, you immerse yourself—fully, deliciously, and wholeheartedly.

Our story

Founded by George Butterfield, Sidney Robinson and his sister Martha (who, years later, married George!), our first-ever trip was mapped out in a Toronto living room. The plan? A 45-day European adventure for students eager to explore new places, meet new people, and soak up the sunshine. It didn’t take long to realize that this wasn’t just a trip—it was the start of something bigger. The trio quickly saw that travellers of all ages craved more immersive experiences. And so, B&amp;R was born. Today, George and Martha are still roaming the world together, proving that the best journeys never truly end—they just evolve.&nbsp;
