Our story
It all started in 1966 with a few friends, a shared thirst for adventure, and (of course) a bottle of wine. That first trip—hiking and cycling through Europe—wasn’t just a journey, it was a revelation. Nearly 60 years later, the spirit of it still guides us. We’ve spent decades crafting exceptional active travel experiences for those who believe the best adventures happen when you don’t just dip your toe in the water, you immerse yourself—fully, deliciously, and wholeheartedly.
Our Founders
Founded by George Butterfield, Sidney Robinson and his sister Martha (who, years later, married George!), our first-ever trip was mapped out in a Toronto living room. The plan? A 45-day European adventure for students eager to explore new places, meet new people, and soak up the sunshine. It didn’t take long to realize that this wasn’t just a trip—it was the start of something bigger. The trio quickly saw that travellers of all ages craved more immersive experiences. And so, B&R was born. Today, George and Martha are still roaming the world together, proving that the best journeys never truly end—they just evolve.
How We Travel
We believe in the art of travel done right: authentic connections, responsible exploration, and the perfect blend of activity and indulgence. Sure, we love a world-class hotel and rare vintage from the cellar (who doesn’t?).
