Ah, the age-old question: how fit do I need to be to do a bike trip? One of our most commonly asked questions, our answer is: you don’t have to be an athlete in any way to complete a B&amp;R bike trip.We’ve been doing this for over 50 years, and we’re big on everyone marching to the beat of their own drum. We believe that you should go at whatever speed suits you: slow, fast or something in between. No matter what speed you plan to go, it’s a good idea to train prior to your trip to get the most out of it.Our best bit of advice is this: get out and ride! Spending some dedicated time on your bike before your trip will help avoid overly sore muscles, lessen fatigue and acclimatize to life on two wheels. Below we've shared some important tips to help you prepare for your next B&amp;R biking or e-biking trip:&nbsp;

As mentioned above, the best way to prepare for your trip is to simply get out on your bike! We recommend riding outdoors for a few hours per week for the month leading up to your trip, increasing the time spent riding the closer you get to your departure date, and adding in some cross-training activities such as strength training, yoga or Pilates.&nbsp;We highly recommend getting outside on your bike as often as possible—spin classes are great for cardio, but don’t give you much practice for handling and braking, which are important skills you’ll need to stay comfortable and safe on your B&amp;R trip. Don’t forget to keep hydrated throughout your activities, stretch afterwards, and leave ample time to recover.&nbsp;&nbsp;Above all, make sure you enjoy the ride!

Bike Safety - Before Your Trip 

Here are our recommendations for getting ready for your bike trip, based on your trip’s <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/our-equipment#activity-levels" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">activity level</a>. B&amp;R offers a <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/ways-to-go/e-biking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">portfolio</a> of e-bike-only departures in destinations with more challenging terrain, so everyone can tackle steep inclines and roll along at the same speed. Below we've answered our most commonly-asked e-bike questions to help your prepare for your trip.An <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/get-inspired/your-e-bike-questions" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">e-bike</a> is a conventional bicycle outfitted with a small motor that provides electrical assistance when riding. As you ride, the motor provides a boost of energy that aids your efforts, allowing you to ride faster and further than you could on a standard bike.&nbsp;While they create the perfect opportunity for pedalling in hilly areas, it should be noted that e-bikes feel heavier than standard road bikes due to their build with batteries and electric motors. This means it may take some time to get used to the feel of the extra weight as you begin to ride.If you've never used an e-bike, but have booked a B&amp;R e-biking trip, we recommend renting one before your B&amp;R trip to get a sense of the speed, weight and feel.

E-Bike Safety

E-bikes are designed to be easy to use and, as long as you can ride a standard bike, it takes only a couple of minutes to get accustomed to the e-system.To use an e-bike, simply turn it on using the power button, select your desired power mode on the display computer, and you’re ready to ride!&nbsp;The gears, brakes and pedals work exactly the same as a standard bike, but be aware of the added torque an e-bike provides when you first start moving.If you need to increase or decrease the power mode on the e-bike, including turning the bike off, you can toggle the buttons on the display computer without having to stop riding.

Almost all e-bikes are designed with a set speed limit that caps the power output at a designated speed–in Europe, this is 25km/h. This limit is a safety feature, but it’s important to note that it does not prevent a rider from going faster, it simply dictates that anything past the 25km/h limit must be 100% powered by the rider. This limit is typically designated by local jurisdiction, so it may vary in different parts of the world.

An e-bike battery should last you all day on a B&amp;R trip! Most good quality pedelec e-bikes have ratings around 120km (or about 75 mi.) of riding per charge, providing you’re using the lowest power mode. There are many factors that can impact battery charge, including wind, road conditions and elevation, but most riders can get through the day without worrying about it. We’ll always have spare batteries on hand if yours runs low!

The type of e-bike you’ll receive on a B&amp;R trip will depend on the region you’re travelling in, as we select bike models to suit regional needs and local terrain. Spanning from Munich to Salzburg in southeast Germany, Bavaria is a picturesque region adorned with fairytale villages, delightful beer gardens, glacial lakes, and breathtaking views of the Alps. Whether you’re exploring breweries and museums in Munich, cycling through the pre-Alps, or getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the real-life castle that inspired Walt Disney, this tiny region is a fantasy playground that caters to a variety of tastes.In the interview below, we caught up with Experience Designer Mario Koch, and Region Expert Florian Marbach, as they share what you can expect on a trip to Bavaria.&nbsp;

Bavaria is adorned with classic pre-alpine scenery, from postcard-perfect rolling hills dotted with dome-shaped churches to baroque art and the sound of cowbells. It’s also the only region in Germany boasting the Alps! There’s so much opportunity to embark on challenging bike rides and hiking that range from scenic walks to multi-day treks in the mountains. The moderate mountain heights mean you don't have to venture far for an authentic alpine experience.

As the wealthiest German state, you’re never far from a well-polished road. The infrastructure makes travel here smooth and flawless, whether you’re going by bike, train, car, or on foot. The local way of life also attracts a population drawn to the outdoors, who still uphold strong traditional values.&nbsp;It's not uncommon to see people wearing lederhosen in their daily lives, because that’s what they have been doing for hundreds of years! It’s also fascinating to hear the region’s distinct dialect still spoken, setting them apart with their own unique language.

It's a diverse mix, from families looking for an active vacation to travellers who want beautiful hikes, grand hotels, and relaxed evenings with minimal transfers. We've had father-son duos keen on biking and large groups looking for cultural-focused experiences. There’s also interest in events like the Sound of Music, and that, culminating with incredible hotels and short distances makes a wonderful experience because we are able to reach new places in a lovely way.

If time is limited, I'd suggest exploring Munich and then heading southeast to Salzburg, where you can visit your first beer garden in the pre-Alps region before heading to one of Bavaria’s lakes for outdoor activities. The area is great for biking, hiking, kayaking, and more adventurous pursuits like canyoning. Among the lakes, Tegernsee Lake stands out as the most scenic, boasting six 5-star hotels. It can get quite busy, so knowing the best times to visit and the ideal spots to take people is important!If you have more time or prefer not to head to Salzburg from Munich, I suggest going southwest to explore the possibilities around Neuschwanstein Castle. While it can get crowded, we have the advantage of getting our travellers in early, before the crowds arrive. We can also arrange visits to breweries where we have connections with the brewmasters and cooking classes where you'll roam around gardens to pick your own ingredients.

Bavarian cuisine effortlessly embraces regional, kilometre-zero, and seasonal ingredients as a way of life rather than just a trend—a tradition passed down through generations. On our active days, expect lunch in rustic alpine huts, where you'll savour farm-fresh cuisine like cheese, buttermilk, cold cuts, freshly baked bread and garden-fresh salads.&nbsp;Dinners offer so many options. In cities like Munich and Salzburg, you have everything from fusion cuisine to Michelin-starred establishments. In smaller towns, young chefs are taking the reins, serving contemporary twists on traditional Alpine dishes.

One of my top picks in Munich is the Residenz München, known for its grotto and baroque theatre. The Schloss Neuschwanstein and other castles associated with King Ludwig are also must-sees. His reclusive nature set him apart, but his unique taste in opera and architecture led him to build these magnificent medieval-inspired castles in the 19th century.Another favourite is Lindahorf Palace. Unlike other medieval castles, Lindahorf was built to resemble the taste of its owner, particularly influenced by Richard Wagner's opera. The palace's interiors are covered in frescos designed to mimic stage sets, making it really special for cultural enthusiasts.

These 10 Epic Trips Are Adventurous & Eco-Friendly

In January, Japan’s Noto Peninsula suffered a major earthquake, which damaged roads and buildings, and impacted communication lines to the region.This part of the country is special to B&amp;R. We have been <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/trip/scheduled/central-japan-biking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">cycling the Noto Peninsula for over a decade</a>, making friends and building a community here. In the days that followed the tragedy, information was hard to come by and we waited, hopeful to hear word from our partners on the ground that they and their families were safe.&nbsp;Chef Toshiya Ikehata is one of those people. One of the culinary highlights of our time in Noto has been dinner at his Michelin-starred L’Atelier de Noto in Wajima. Opened in 2014, he was planning to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his famed French restaurant with an expansion.&nbsp;

Orsolya Kako, our Experience Designer for Japan, managed to locate Chef Ikehata and his activities. While plans for his restaurant are on hold, he has focused his energy on feeding his community. Just two days after the earthquake, Chef Ikehata opened a soup kitchen, and brought peers from 20 restaurants together to do the same in several locations across the peninsula. They are now preparing and serving thousands of meals a day to residents and relief volunteers in Wajima.&nbsp;Through B&amp;R’s <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/who-we-are/sustainability/the-slow-fund" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Slow Fund</a> we have been able to support his courageous efforts, and we cannot wait to return to introduce our travellers to him and his signature dishes once the region opens again to visitors.&nbsp;B&amp;R established the Slow Fund to support community projects in the destinations our travellers visit. The fund focuses on projects that serve education, arts and culture, nature and wildlife conservation and community wellbeing, and is currently supporting projects in nine projects around the world.

We will always be grateful to our travellers for their tremendous response to B&amp;R’s appeal for Morocco. Through the Butterfield &amp; Robinson <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/who-we-are/sustainability/the-slow-fund" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Slow Fund</a>, and the generosity of past travellers to the region, we have been working in partnership with Rachid, a longtime friend, host and mountain guide, in supporting him to rebuild some of his family’s’ homes in the village of Imlil. Many homes in his and neighbouring villages in the Atlas Mountains were severely damaged, along with the local school and clinic.Rachid has spent much of his time since the September 8, 2023 earthquake assisting rebuild operations and driving supplies to more remote villages in need of greater assistance.With an initial budget of US$50,000 (donations from B&amp;R travellers), Rachid set about navigating permits, materials, and a building crew in a race against the elements before the mountain winter set in.&nbsp;

As we write this update, mid-December, his latent project management skills continue driving building efforts as the first two homes near completion and work on a new third house commences. Rachid’s uncle Hamid and cousin, Said, both had their family homes condemned by government engineers. It is hoped that they will move into their new homes by the end of the December as the electrical wiring and plumbing works gets sign off. The third home currently under construction, will hopefully home Mustafa’s family by late January, 2024.&nbsp;Rachid hopes that he will be able to start work on his ancestral home in early spring. Their home is a heritage building, being the oldest house in Imlil and has seen several generations born here.&nbsp;Many other families who need to repair or rebuild, have moved down from the mountains for winter. They will return in spring, thus a long recovery ahead for many families still, but fortunately thanks to Rachid's timely efforts and the generosity of the B&amp;R community, many of his family have been able to stay in Imlil.

Our Regional Expert, Orsolya Kako, will be returning to Morocco in early 2024 and will connect with Rachid in Imlil to visit the new homes and discuss further needs. Following her assessment, the remainder of the relief budget will be allocated.Tourism remains a driver of the Moroccan economy. It’s essential that we continue to visit the region we love so much, supporting their economy in rebuilding all that has been lost

The Slow Fund: Morocco Earthquake Relief Update 

Whether it’s to spot the northern lights, a solar eclipse or the Milky Way, night sky tourism is on the rise.&nbsp;A growing number of travellers are booking trips to explore locations around the world by day, and then experience them in a different way at night. The appeal of dark skies is multilayered. For city dwellers, they offer an escape from screen time and city light and provide a way to engage the eyes with a different kind of light source – the solar system. Nature lovers get to discover animals and ecosystems that thrive after dark. And everyone reaps the mental health benefits of the experience. Stargazing and time spent outdoors under darkness is calming, it fosters mindfulness and helps you put things in perspective.&nbsp;Night sky experiences typically happen in designated dark sky reserves, areas found around the world that are protected from development and committed to reducing or eliminating light pollution. They might involve a guided tour, astronomy lesson or storytelling, a photography tutorial or simply embracing the quiet and taking it all in.&nbsp;

New Zealand is attempting to become the world’s second certified dark sky nation. (The tiny island country of Niue, in the South Pacific, became the first in 2020.) With the South Island’s Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, as well as off-grid islands like Aotea (also known as Great Barrier Island) and the peaks in Queenstown, there are <a href="https://butterfield.com/trip/bespoke/new-zealand-bespoke" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(5, 99, 193);">plenty of spots in the Oceanic country</a> to set your sights high.&nbsp;

But you don’t need to be in a dark sky reserve to go star spotting. Because of their remote locations, countries in the far north and south lend themselves especially well to stargazing. The Bucharest Botanical Garden is a favourite walking spot among the locals, spanning over 17 hectares and home to over 10,000 plant species. The house was used as Principal Weems’ office (as well as a few shots from Nevermore's Raven ball), but in real life housed the Romanian Writers Union HQ until 2013.In 2015, new owners began to transform the place into a vibrant multicultural center complete with a restaurant, a garden and spaces to hold live music events.

A copy of the Complete Works was secretly circulated by Sonny Venkatrathnam among his fellow political prisoners on Robben Island in the 1970s, asking them to sign their names next to their favourite passages. Sonny covered it with images of Hindu figures to disguise it as a holy book.Nelson Mandela signed next to a passage from Julius Caesar, which begins, “Cowards die many times before their deaths”. While Schalkwyk examined the representation and experience of imprisonment in South African prison memoirs and the prison that is Denmark for Shakespeare’s Hamlet, I was profoundly moved by his reference to “a book that had passed through the hands of the people who had saved my country,” and the idea of the power of literature and words to provide resistance for political prisoners during apartheid.&nbsp;

Q&A WITH DR. JANIE COLE 

So, as a musicologist, I wondered where was the music in such a space of intense oppression, violence, sorrow, and resistance in a country where singing is the primary cultural expression?&nbsp;&nbsp;Thus began this cultural-heritage preservation project in the form of a film, book and <a href="https://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2020-12-17-amplifying-the-voices-of-women-struggle-heroes" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);">archive</a>, which trace the role of music and resistance in apartheid prisons, with a special focus on Robben Island and the women’s jails, through first-hand struggle testimonies and music by surviving former political prisoners and guards.&nbsp;

I was inspired to found <a href="http://www.musicbeyondborders.net/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);">Music Beyond Borders</a>, which focuses on the role of music in social change, surviving trauma and supporting human rights, after my first interviews with former political prisoners of apartheid in 2011.&nbsp;After surviving 9/11, I was unable to listen to music for a long time thereafter, which as a musicologist I found incomprehensible on so many levels, so I got interested in how music and sound can link to trauma, memory, sensory association and overload, and healing.&nbsp;&nbsp;I was most impacted by the stories of abuse and conditions in the prisons and of apartheid. I had read Nelson Mandela’s now famous comment from his 1994 autobiography about the conditions in South Africa’s apartheid prisons which reflected the reality of thousands of political activists:&nbsp;&nbsp;“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones – and South Africa treated its imprisoned African citizens like animals.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The accounts that I was hearing verified the worst of Mandela’s statements, especially those about women and gender-based violence. The women’s struggle stories are particularly overlooked historically and their treatment at the hands of the security police was different to men’s.&nbsp;

Our vision is that MBBs’ educational film WE ARE NOT AFRAID will preserve this rich South African cultural heritage, capture the memories of South Africa’s long struggle against apartheid, honour the legacy of struggle veterans, and raise consciousness, especially about gender-based violence past and present.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The focus on Robben Island is an obvious one as the most notorious apartheid prison which held Nelson Mandela and hundreds of other political prisoners. However, we have aimed to concentrate on the unknown ‘foot soldiers’ of the struggle, as opposed to the liberation leaders, whose stories have been told many times of course.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As Thoko Mpumlwana, a political prisoner held at the brutal Number 4 women’s jail at the Old Fort says:“Human beings must not repeat mistakes of the past and to communicate that through testimony and music would cut through much better than probably saying it or writing a thesis. Because if people understand what was going on, it will be a learning tool for future generations. To know what it means to dehumanize the other, and to also know that even in the midst of that dehumanization, the truth prevails, good will always prevail over evil.”&nbsp;

For travellers seeking a slower pace, a walking holiday offers just that while allowing you to explore far beyond the traditional sights.&nbsp;This type of holiday is growing in popularity, too, with countries around the world launching multi-day paths for travellers to conquer. Wales, for instance, is a leader. Covering the entire length of its coastline, the country debuted its Coast Path, all 1,400 km (870 mi) of it, in 2012 as the world’s first coastal walking path.&nbsp;Beyond paths that lead you through striking scenery, seeing a country while on a walking trip allows you to experience it in a more intimate way. In the United Kingdom especially, walking creates the opportunity for serendipitous meetings and sightings. You might stumble upon a gem of a bookstore walking through a village or stop for a chat with a local farmer while they’re out harvesting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whether your passion is history or literature, food or photography, by exploring on foot, you will gain access to the region’s intricacies in a way unlike any other.&nbsp;

In <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/trip/scheduled/cornwall-coastal-walking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(5, 99, 193);">Cornwall</a>, for instance, you’ll be spoiled by access to sun-kissed views from the coastline and fresh seafood direct from the morning’s catch. The best way to experience the UK’s charm is on a walk

Our 2022 European season commenced unlike any other year we’ve seen in history.&nbsp;After two years of virtual dinner parties, post-work Zoom happy hours and flexing their creative muscles from the <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/what-social-distancing-looks-like-around-the-world" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">comfort of their homes</a>, it’s safe to say that our Guides were absolutely yearning for the moment to reconvene in true B&amp;R fashion.We’ve hosted our annual Guide Kick-Off from our office in Beaune in the heart of Burgundy every year. And while a certain pandemic drove a significant wedge into how our seasons regularly commence, it also wove a silver lining into the atmosphere at this year’s festivities.

Seeing friends who’ve been scattered around the world for the past two years was incredibly special and inspiring. Feelings of emotion filled the air as our talented team shared stories, laughter and tears of joy. From eager new guides and our savviest veterans to a few faces from our Toronto office—this year’s Kick-Off marked a new era at B&amp;R. One signifying the return of travel, feeling grateful to embrace human connection once again and being more inspired than ever by the places we’re so lucky to visit.

Typical days at Kick-Off began with communal breakfasts and plenty of espresso—energized to hear rousing information sessions from our varying departments. New guides were filled in on everything from B&amp;R’s history to our sustainability efforts as Experience Designer Christine Tucker shared the latest news about our revitalized <a href="https://butterfield.com/who-we-are/sustainability/the-slow-fund" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Slow Fund</a>.Come lunchtime we settle into picnics with our local friends in Beaune, a few who cater our <a href="https://butterfield.com/trip/scheduled/burgundy-wine-country-biking" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Burgundy Wine Country Biking</a> trips! Fuelled for the afternoon, the crew heads to the atelier for bike training with our cycling experts, then embarked on daily 30 km bike rides through Burgundy’s villages and vineyards. This was the perfect opportunity to make use of our new GPS system, bringing forth a seamless way to navigate the meticulously-crafted biking routes you can expect on this season’s <a href="https://butterfield.com/how-to-travel/scheduled-trips" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Scheduled trips</a>. It was incredible seeing everyone assume the role of a Guide: raising one another’s spirits, embracing physical activity and ensuring no one was left behind.

That quintessential spirit of generosity proliferated throughout evening aperitivi, dinners and wine tastings, where our entire roster of Guides then assumed the role of a host: refilling their neighbour’s glass before their own, ensuring everyone sampled the best dishes and diving into vibrant conversation.The final night’s celebration started off as a beautiful dinner and slowly evolved into an impromptu talent show and karaoke! In true Guide fashion, no one was afraid to show off their chops. High spirits and adrenaline filled the air as five days of intense training came to an end.&nbsp;Below are some of our favourite moments from this year’s Guide Kick-Off!

Guide Kick-Off 2022

Raman Kaminski is a Belarusian artist who was forced to leave his home country during the protests after the elections in 2020. He sought refuge in Kyiv, Ukraine where he had gone to art school. However, he was soon forced to leave again as a result of the Russian invasion, leaving behind his artwork and materials, and relocating to Georgia with just a suitcase in tow.Meanwhile, a former B&amp;R guide who had worked in Belarus and met Raman had commissioned a painting from him. She had returned to the States and was working on an Artist in Residence program at the Chapelle Ste. Catherine in Fontevraud l’Abbaye, Loire Valley, France. Through connections, Raman was found in Georgia and he was offered to be the first “Artist in Residence”. B&amp;R’s Slow Fund is proud to have sponsored the materials needed for Raman to set up his residency. And he began painting!

After a three-month residency, Raman now calls Paris home where his talent as an artist continues to flourish. He even had the opportunity to connect with B&amp;R travellers during a Bespoke trip to the Loire Valley this summer.&nbsp;Raman's determination and talent as an artist are a true inspiration, and he continues to pursue his dreams despite the obstacles in his path. Recently, Raman had a solo show in Paris, and his most recent work can be viewed on his Instagram page <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ramankaminski/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@ramankaminski</a>.&nbsp;

The Slow Fund: Finding Freedom in Creativity

Puglia offers a unique charm that sets it apart from the iconic scenes of Tuscany or the Dolomites. While these regions have their own undeniable allure, Puglia's multifaceted beauty is a must-see for anyone looking to experience the many facets of Italy's stunning landscapes.Travelling through the country is like experiencing 3-4 different regions within one trip, each with its own character. The south boasts a Greek and Baroque style with cities like <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/in-deep-a-brief-history-of-lecce" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lecce</a> that will leave you astounded, while Alberobello and its&nbsp;trulli&nbsp;are like something out of a fairytale. But Puglia isn't just a pretty postcard; it's about the energy, the people, the feeling and emotion.Ernesto Fucci's life has always revolved around Southern Italy, particularly <a href="https://butterfield.com/destination/europe/italy/puglia" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Puglia</a>, where he now serves as B&amp;R's Experience Designer. As a seasoned guide, Ernesto has transitioned to curating unforgettable adventures for our travellers.Our Pugliese family welcomed Ernesto and the B&amp;R Puglia team with open arms during their recent research trip, from local olive farmers and restaurateurs to longtime friends and guides.Together with former Regional Director Christina Cain and Puglia Trip Manager Valentina, the team hit the road to discover new experiences for the upcoming season—and how special it was to have the entire team together again, reconnecting and sharing their passion for unearthing the very best the region has to offer.Ernesto shares his notes from the road in the interview below.

The purpose of our research trip was to harness the immense human potential that <a href="https://butterfield.com/who-we-are/meet-the-designers/christina-cain" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Christina</a>, who has spent many years working in the region, has cultivated. The people, whether our guides or suppliers, add that special touch to our trips, making them truly exceptional and unforgettable. Upon visiting for the first time since the pandemic it was amazing to see Puglia in its full glory again and experience the atmosphere once more. Despite it being January, Lecce and Otranto were teeming with newfound energy. Puglia's creativity has finally awakened, an incredible spark we've observed in our longtime friends with whom we're planning incredible experiences.

So many! We were given exclusive access to palaces typically closed to the public, where we’ll be hosting events this season. We also visited the owners of a marble quarry that they transformed into a unique botanical garden (complete with a swimming pool) where we plan to organize picnics and relaxing afternoons for our travellers.&nbsp;We met the local farmers who are working hard to combat the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230111-the-super-sniffer-dogs-saving-italys-dying-olive-trees" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">xylella</a> problem that Puglia’s olive trees are currently facing, and we’ll be starting a collaborative project with them next season. We also have exclusive access to a natural reserve overlooking the ocean, where we can organize private events and picnics. We even found an amazing outdoor climbing space, and we have many more exciting discoveries to share!

While Ostuni is already on the tourism radar, we're able to experience it in a completely different way by going behind the scenes. We visit a personal home—a noble villa—that only saves events for B&amp;R. Paula, the lovely owner and host, will take us on a little tour, showcasing their antique horse carriage collection, the biggest in southern Italy!We visited a church on the property and enjoyed a lunch from their family's olive oil and cheese production. This experience highlighted the importance of building and maintaining personal relationships, which can lead to unique and authentic experiences unavailable to the general public.

When we’re not cycling through UNESCO-listed sites and on coastal roads, we’ll go from dancing and dinner in a private castle open exclusively for us, to a picnic in the most beautiful masseria in Puglia. We’ll learn how to make mozzarella with local farmers, we learn about the millennia old culture of oil making while being in an ancient underground oil mill open exclusively for us.But Puglia's real magic lies in the moments that seem to unfold effortlessly, a testament to the decades of relationship building we have cultivated. The locals have come to know and love us over the years, and it's not uncommon for a round of drinks in a local bar to lead to an invitation to someone's home for a traditional meal.&nbsp;

Two accommodations stood out to me. The first was the <a href="https://palazzomaresgallo.com/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Palazzo Maresgallo</a>, an old aristocratic palace in the heart of Lecce that has been transformed into a small luxury hotel. This hidden gem is a work of art, and we're proud to be pioneers as the only travel company invited to stay. The baroque essence of the city is beautifully juxtaposed with modern art, resulting in a fascinating style that truly impresses.

<a href="https://www.naturalisbioresort.com/home-en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Naturalis Bio Resort</a> left a lasting impression on me, and the place truly lives up to its name. It's located in the Salento countryside and feels like a world apart, where nature reigns supreme and time stands still. With a simple style dedicated to sustainability, this self-sufficient hotel inspires travellers to embrace the natural world. Everything is designed to minimize environmental impact, from vegetable gardens to aloe vera cultivation and oil production.

Abandon all preconceptions, as we’re about to enter an amazing place where every little glimpse, building and meal brings a jumble of emotions stemming from unparalleled cultural and historical intersections.&nbsp;From the Baroque architectural beauty and the small dwellings of <a href="https://butterfield.com/get-inspired/the-trulli-of-alberobello" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Alberobello</a>, to unparalleled food, where authenticity, simplicity combined with an innovative approach will amaze the taste buds with every bite. And above all, the people, their hospitality and joviality.&nbsp;Puglia without its people would be lost, because it is precisely the people who give this land a dancing, festive, welcoming and unique character.

Notes From the Road: A Research Trip in Puglia

The Slow Fund is proud to partner with <a href="https://www.olivami.com/en/corporate-gardens/butterfield-robinson/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">OlivaMi</a> to support their vision and reforest the landscape of Salento, Puglia, a region our travellers have been experiencing for over a decade.In Italy's heel, olive trees are the landscape, the cultural heritage, the economy; they are the symbolic heart of Puglia. The trees have been part of the Adriatic coast for thousands of years and some families trace their ancestral roots along with the ancient, gnarled groves.&nbsp;Everywhere you visit in Puglia, winding routes lead through lands of ulivi monumentali — centuries-old olive trees that you instinctively want to hug. The oil produced is&nbsp;amongst the most sublime in the world.Puglia produces nearly half of Italy’s olive oil but in the last decade, this cultural heritage has been decimated by the bacteria Xylella fastidiosa, destroying over 21 million olive trees in Salento alone, a significant amount even for a region so dedicated to this argricultural practice. Salento has been at the heart of olive oil production for centuries, and has been the source of income and purpose for generations of farmers. Because of the Xylella problem, sadly around 5,000 growers no longer have workable groves.

Out of this devastation, a beautiful opportunity to reimagine and reforest the Salento countryside has been born through OlivaMi. OlivaMi is a nonprofit association run by a diverse group of young locals, united in their focused passion: to restore the olive groves, revive their cultural heritage, secure their economic future, combat climate change and cultivate new biodiversity through introducing Xylella-resistant olive species as well as other species of tree along a grove’s perimeters.

Through a donation in the fall of 2023, 160 new olive trees were planted and 40 established trees adopted. The new varietals include Leccino and Favolosa olive trees. Butterfield &amp; Robinson is committed to helping Puglia and the olive trees and will continue to evaluate ways to support Olivami and their efforts.On our <a href="https://butterfield.com/destination/europe/italy/puglia" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Puglia trips</a>, we visit what will grow into a B&amp;R sponsored olive grove. Every traveller booked in the region contributes to the project to ensure the expansion of the restoration efforts.

The Slow Fund: Reforesting Salento with Olivami

The jewel of the Mediterranean, Sardinia remains one of Italy's best-kept secrets, often overshadowed by its mainland counterparts.While it’s known for its rugged coastline and welcoming hospitality, one of the most intriguing facts is that the islands, particularly the areas of Ogliastra, Barbagia di Ollolai and Barbagia of Seulo, are designated a ‘Blue Zone'—a region of the world where people live much longer than average.Netflix’s <a href="https://www.bluezones.com/documentary/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zone</a> follows author and explorer Dan Buettner as he uncovers why <a href="https://butterfield.com/destination/europe/italy/sardinia" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sardinia</a> is home to one of the world's highest concentrations of centenarians (people who live to 100 years old). In fact, Sardinia boasts more than 20 times the number of centenarians compared to similar populations in the United States.&nbsp;

So, what's the secret behind Sardinia's culture of longevity?

While some attribute Sardinia's longevity to the island's high-altitude villages, others point to the deep sense of community deeply woven into their way of life.No matter where you are on the island, take a look around: you are sure to see older people still living purpose-filled and healthy lives integrated with the rest of society, and even still working the land. Growing up in Sardinia, it isn’t uncommon for children to grow up getting to know their great-grandparents.

Tight-Knit Communities

With a culture linked strongly to its agrarian practices, there is very little processed food. Sardinians have a culinary tradition entwined with the seasons, producing most of their food at home. One of the best places to get a glimpse into Sardinia’s longevity secrets is in Nonna's kitchen, where the same time-honoured recipes have been passed down through generations.The traditional Sardinian kitchen is stocked with homemade pasta, whole-grain bread, garden vegetables, seasonal fruits, beans, nuts, seeds and homemade sweets, to name a few. The high concentration of bread and pasta raises the question of whether carbs are truly the enemy. Buettner's evidence suggests&nbsp;the contrary—as long as the ingredients are of a high quality and traditionally prepared.&nbsp;
