- Difficulty Level
Level 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Ride from Austria to Hungary
Shabby chic and old world charm: the Danube is Central Europe’s blissful conduit. We follow it through three countries and capitals, where quiet lakes, historic towns and globally ranked restaurants await around every bend – as do a night in Budapest’s Gresham Palace, and another at Taubenkobel (where we’re the only bikers invited to stay).

Taubenkobel, Schutzen am Gebirge
Famed most for its superb restaurant, the classy hotel side of Taubenkobel is often overlooked. Showing his versatility, it was Chef Walter Eselböck himself who stepped out of the kitchen to design the rooms, matching his culinary prowess with decorative excellence in the creation of this Relais & Chateaux property.
Villa Vitae - EUR, Balatonfured
This recently opened 17-room property takes its design inspiration from the south of France, from the airy interior spaces to the blue shutters framing its windows and doors. Views from the terrace and infinity pool overlook the lake; inside, a private cinema seating 20 is a favourite with guests.
Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest
A bucket-list property if ever there was one, the Gresham Palace ranks among the most grandiose and awe-inspiring hotels in Europe. Recently named the #1 hotel in all Europe by T+L readers, it truly has to be seen to be appreciated.
We travel all over the world and have high expectations from our travel providers. Never before have we had a trip that exceeded our expectations from start to finish. Getting off the beaten path, seeing our children ride along without a care in the world, delighting in each others company and the new sights and experiences they encountered each day... it was sublime. Thank you!— Ginger Salazar
We never wanted to be the biggest travel company in the world, just the best.
— George Butterfield
Most of the riding on this trip is perfectly flat, although there is a very occasional short, gentle climb, particularly on the second day. Daily elevation gains are roughly 50 m (164 feet). The daily distances average 50 km (31 mi.). There are two layover days, which allow for some shorter routes and, for avid cyclists, longer options.

Spend more time in Budapest
Budapest is often referred to as one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe and chances are you’ll want to spend at least an extra day here. With parks brimming with attractions, museums filled with treasures, pleasure boats sailing up and down the scenic Danube and Turkish-era thermal baths belching steam, the Hungarian capital is a delight both by day and by night.
