We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”
Curious beauty in the Carpathians
One of Europe’s most profound heritages, a journey through Romania includes no shortage of stops to fortified churches, UNESCO Heritage Sites, traditional farms, and medieval citadels and fortresses. We’ll spend most of our time in Transylvania, surrounded and protected by a horseshoe of mountains known as the Carpathian Mountains. Join us in trekking through a patchwork of pastoral scenes and bucolic countryside, meandering through mountain towns, sipping wine at sensational wineries and learning trades from local artisans, as we delve into Romanian culture and history.

Day by Day
Hit the ground walking with a tour through Bucharest and its significant sites like Revolution Square. We’ll have an early lunch here before we visit Peles Castle, the summer residence of King Carol and Pelisor Castle and former residence of Queen Mary.
We travel to Moieciu village, close to the city of Bran. From Moieciu, we’ll journey along a trail to the charming village of Magura. Nearby, we’ll visit the Bran Castle, known as the Romanian Queen Mary’s favourite mountain resort and the setting for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
A walk along the Sticlariei Valley brings us to the medieval town of Brasov, known for its Gothic 'Black Church' and world-famous Buchholz organ. Local craftsmen offer us a lesson in brick and felt making before we return to our hotel to watch the cows come home (literally!)
Our route continues to Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the “Siebenburgen” – the seven fortified cities network created by the Saxon colonists. We’ll explore the open squares and winding alleyways before we sit down to lunch in the citadel.
Climb up and over the hills from Cund as we follow a mosaic of forests and meadows. At Villa Vinea winery, we’ll enjoy lunch and a tasting of Romanian wine. Tonight, you are invited to a special five-course meal.
It’s time to leave Transylvania, but not before visiting the famous Biertan UNESCO heritage fortress. Then we’ll head towards Sibiu for a short walking tour of this beautiful medieval city. From here, your guides will make arrangements for your onward travels.

Spend more time in Bucharest
Bucharest is a great city, still bursting with the energy of rejuvenation and renewal after decades of stasis. It is well worth spending an extra day or two here, before or after your B&R trip. We’ll happily recommend a city guide for an insider’s tour. Beyond the capital and your biking itinerary, Romania offers an array of fascinating sites, such as the renowned painted monasteries of Bucovina, in the country’s northeast.
