We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”

Rising in Switzerland but spending most of its course in France, the River Rhône is one of the great, and greatly underappreciated, waterways of Europe. With its tributary the Saône, it forms a panoramic corridor linking Mediterranean Provence with the more temperate climes of Burgundy. Historic riverside cities like Avignon, St Remy de Provence, and Lyon serve as landmarks between the world-renowned wine regions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cotes-du-Rhône, and Beaujolais, while along the way, bike paths and quiet roads offer easygoing pedalling, with an occasional foray into the vineyard-covered hills beyond. Add in B&R’s trademark cultural events and insights, and the week becomes a marvellous voyage of discovery – without ever having to pack up and move hotels.

Day by Day
Rendezvous in Avignon and explore the town's papal palace with a local guide. This evening, enjoy a beautiful welcome dinner on board the S.S. Catherine.
Today, ride through farmland crossing the vast Plaine de la Crau. The next leg of your ride is into the pastoral countryside around Fontvieille. This evening you'll regroup aboard for a B&R exclusive tasting of Rhône wines with a former sommelier for Alain Ducasse.
Bike the agricultural valley roads that lay below the Alpilles, Provence's iconic mini-Alps, until you descend into St-Rémy. Tonight enjoy an early evening walk through the historic centre of Avignon before returning to the ship for dinner.
Wake up at the foot of Viviers, a pleasant riverside town. Ride on the river flats, towards the Ardèche region to the south, all the way to Bourg Saint Andéol, a medieval enclave. Stop for a coffee and contemplate whether you want to take the short, flat route along the Via Rhona back to Viviers to browse or tackle the longer option going to Saint Montan and the gorgeous winding climb up to Larnas and Saint-Thome.
Wake up to the dramatic, terraced vineyards about Tain-L'Hermitage, the capital of Côtes du Rhône wine production. Ride through world-renowned vineyards of the appellations such as Chantemerle and Crozes-Hermitage, and then enjoy a delicious lunch back on board.
Today you can discover Lyon, the third-largest city in France, often overshadowed by its neighbours. Begin our discovery with a pleasant urban ride that defines the layout of the city, before delving into its storied past with guided stops along the way. Tonight you'll enjoy a special cooking class at the renowned Paul Bocuse Institute!
Awake to find yourself approaching the southern Burgundian city of Mâcon. Ride through many authentic villages and famous wine appellations before enjoying lunch at Bistrot L'Ancienne Auberge, owned by the illustrious 3 Michelin starred Chef George Blanc.
After a final breakfast on the water, we say our farewells!
Uniworld's S.S. Catherine
The 80-stateroom S.S. Catherine was launched in 2014 as part of Uniworld’s new generation of ‘river superships’ that add length without increasing staterooms, meaning more onboard room for all. Public-area amenities include everything from an indoor splash pool to a self-service laundry, as well as an impressive collection of original works of art. Suites are individually decorated; all B&R cabins boast French balconies affording wide views of the riverscapes. The vessel is fully airconditioned, and features high-quality beds and linens, marble bathrooms with Hermes and L’Occitane accessories, and a knowledgeable, professional crew of 50-plus. The restaurant, often resupplied with fresh regional ingredients en route, offers an array of beautifully prepared starters and entrees, as well as a sumptuous buffet breakfast.View ship website »
Travelling with B&R is an over-the-top experience. It seems that every moment from biking in the breathtaking countryside to the luxury hotels, the food, the wine, the other travellers, and the excellent guides—all are the most memorable. The hardest part of the trip is the return to reality!— Betsy Sampliner
"We never wanted to be the biggest travel company in the world, just the best.
— George Butterfield
Most of the riding on this trip is flat to gentle on quiet roads and dedicated bicycle paths. There are a few hills to be biked, especially on Days 3 and 6. There are numerous long options for eager riders. Road surfaces are either paved or consist of hard-packed dirt and gravel. B&R therefore strongly recommends the use of hybrid bicycles for this trip. Daily elevation gains range between 25 m (82 feet) and 300m (1000 feet).
“I ride my bike once or twice a month and am comfortable on two wheels.”
Relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.Read more on our Activity Levels
