- Difficulty Level
Level 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Glory on either side of the Apennines
Prepare to savour some of the best meals of your life. Did we say meals? We meant wines (think Barolos and Barbarescos). Wait – we meant views (think Italian Riviera). Oh, shoot, no. We meant hotels (there’s a reason they call them Splendido).

Day by Day
Head into the heart of the Langhe and the village of Montelupo Albese to start on our amazingly quiet ridge walk. Enjoy a cellar tour and taste the fabulous wines over lunch at their trattoria with homemade antipasti and pastas.
Start your walk in the lovely Alta Langa, Piemonte's "wild fringe" of hazelnut groves, forests and fields. En route, meet up with our friend and trifulao (truffle hunter) Beppe and his trusty dog Tina to search for the famous local truffle. After, enjoy a delightful picnic buffet in the hamlet of San Bovo.
Plunge deeper into the heart of the Barolo Langhe today. Stroll the quiet, gentle ridge roads and trails through world-renowned vineyards into Monforte d'Alba, Novello and Barolo. Tonight we savour a gastronomic dinner amid the vines right in our intimate hotel, an evening to write home about. Salute!
Today we head to the sea! Walk among villas to the historic fishing village of Camogli to try their delicious focaccia, then cross the beautiful Monte di Portofino park to our amazing digs. Later, stroll down to Portofino’s picturesque harbour for a bit of history and who’s-who over cocktails before exploring the town’s many dinner options on your own.
Enjoy a boat cruise out of the azure Bay of Dolphins to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso. After a quick visit, traverse back home on pine-shaded trails through Portofino Regional Park. Tonight, celebrate our walking exploration with a farewell aperitivo on the hotel terrace, followed by a candlelit dinner of local specialties.
After breakfast together, we will drop you off either at the train station in Genoa (from which trains leave frequently both north and southbound) or at the Genoa airport. Arrivederci!
Get lost in a gourmand’s paradise.

Our guides were so helpful and fun to be with! Everything just happened–as if by magic–exactly when it should have, giving one the sense of being extremely well taken care of.— Linda Dipaolo Love
Our walking is somewhat hilly with a few steep sections, and a few flat ones. For the most part, we stay on the dirt paths that run through the vineyards and forests, but we occasionally take quiet asphalt roads. There are also several sections with steps in Liguria. The daily distances and long options range from 5 to 15 km (3 to 9 mi.) with good van support for when you’re ready to relax back at the hotel.
What’s included? Everything you need. Plus everything you’d
want. Plus a few things you never knew you wanted ‘til you got them.

Just southeast of the Italian Riviera lies famed Cinque Terre, which make for an excellent place to extend your vacation and get in more excellent walking. While high-end properties in the five towns of the Cinque Terre proper are almost non-existent, it is easy to “commute” to them from larger nearby towns such as Sestri Levante.
