- Difficulty Level
Level 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
The land of kings
Not one but two castles await on this romantic ride through history. Domaine de la Tortiniere opens its Belle Époque doors to B&R, and a private visit to Château du Rivau gives you something in common with Joan of Arc. (Would you like to stay in her room? We’re drawing straws.) After this, slum it with the likes of Richard the Lionheart, Leonardo da Vinci, and a locally lauded chef.

our celebratory final evening, santé!
After breakfast, we will shuttle to the Saint Pierre des Corps train station for connections to Paris—both downtown and Charles de Gaulle Airport. Bon voyage!
Stop and smell the roses (or sunflowers).
Les Sources de Cheverny, Cheverny
A five-star property in the heart of the Loire Valley, the historic Les Sources is a gateway to the best the region has to offer—wine, cycling and the like. Each room is uniquely decorated by the owner herself, Mrs. Alice Tourbier, who scours the local flea markets for pieces that promote a warm and family atmosphere throughout the property.
Chateau du Rivau, Lemere
Located in the heart of the Touraine region, this is a private home whose owners have graciously welcomed B&R as guests. Their 12-plus-year restoration campaign has returned the 15thC historical monument to its former glory, and its whimsical gardens complete the evocative setting. By staying here, you join very illustrious company; Joan of Arc was a guest here in the 15thC.
Domaine de la Tortiniere, Veigne (Montbazon)
We not only feel welcomed at the intimate Château La Tortinière, but very special when we’re there—especially since this immaculately restored 18thC castle seems straight out of a fairy tale. The château offers views over a private park in which some rare plants and trees (a 200-year-old Lebanese Cedar for example) are hidden.
The B&R leaders were incredibly good and all else—bikes, itinerary, special events, and fellow travellers—were absolutely delightful. My husband and I had a wonderful time!— Beth Lowe
For other travelers, the trip of a lifetime may be about experiencing a familiar location in a new way. On Butterfield & Robinson’s cycling tour of France’s Loire Valley, travelers bike past acres of the valley’s sunflower fields, dine at the home of renowned local chef Jean-Claude Rigollet, and overnight at the 15th-century Châteaux du Rivau, an estate where Joan of Arc was once a guest.MSNBC
Most of the riding on this trip is level with gentle grades, but be aware that the Loire Valley is not flat, there are several longer climbs. The daily distances average 45 km (28 mi.). There are three layover days, which allow for some shorter routes and, for avid cyclists, longer options.
