We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”
A spectacular alpine hideaway
We can’t quite make sense of how this northern land, lauded by mountaineers for centuries, remains one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. Though, this makes up one of the many reasons why we hold it so dear to our hearts! On our Dolomites journey, we traverse two gorgeous corners of the region: the Alta Badia and the Alpe di Siusi. The Alta Badia, nestled in the mountain zone, is enticing and full of irresistible Alpine charm. Then, it’s onto Alpe di Siusi, a plateau of incomparable beauty with remarkable flora and fauna to match. Get ready to experience the region’s hospitable people, diverse hikes, fabulous hotels, and all the spa time one deserves after an invigorating day of walking through the mountains.

Day by Day
Following the drive from Hotel Greif to Badia, we set off on a warm-up hike beginning with a chairlift ride from the valley. Our uphill trek through the pine forest leads us to the Santa Croce Sanctuary before we pass by timber farmhouses en route to our beautiful hotel, the Rosa Alpina.
After breakfast, our guides will bring us to a position along a WWI battle line for the start of our hike up to the Cinque Torri. The odd wild goat or intrepid rock climber we’ll spot en route may even inspire you to take on a via ferrata!
Bidding farewell to San Cassiano, we walk along a valley trail to the neighbouring village of Colfosco for a hike along a gorgeous traverse to the top of the Gardena Pass. We’ll lunch in the charming town of Ortisei before we trek through Europe's largest alpine meadow, the Alps of Siusi.
Take your pick from an easygoing or more challenging hiking option today. No matter what you choose, it's sure to be a day well-spent and full of incredible vistas. We dine tonight in a remarkable setting on a specially prepared dinner that we will not soon forget.
A chairlift assists us with a swift ascent into the high alpine air for today's hike, where our route leads us to a ridge with views of the Fassa and Duron valleys and the impressive backdrops of the Gruppo del Sassolungo and Sassopiatto.
Wake early for a vigorous hike or savour a last cappuccino on the breakfast terrace before bidding farewell to the Alpina Dolomites as we set off for Bolzano for your onward travels.
Rosa Alpina, San Cassiano
Rosa Alpina has earned its Relais & Châteaux and Michelin accolades, but what we love most about this understated retreat is its warm hospitality. Hugo Pizzinini welcomes us to the family as soon as we cross the threshold, while Chef Norbert invites us into his kitchen as he prepares dinner. View hotel website »
Alpina Dolomites, Compatsch
Located on Europe’s most beautiful and expansive high-altitude plateau, the Alpina Dolomites offers a perfect position to access hikes, take in spectacular views and be positively pampered in its fabulous spa. Rooms are stylish and refined, complete with gorgeous views from your personal balcony or terrace. View hotel website »
This was truly the best vacation of my life. Each day’s activity was varied, fun and unlike anything I had ever experienced before!— Gian Piero Garda
We never wanted to be the biggest travel company in the world, just the best.
— George Butterfield
This hiking trip covers a variety of terrain that at times is challenging. Paths are hard packed dirt trails with a mix of ascents and descents (some days will involve short transfers and many have chairlifts and gondolas to assist with ascents and descents). Daily distances average 5 to 12 km, with some options for less (or more) challenging hikes. Hiking boots (light to medium weight) with sturdy ankle support and strong grips are highly recommended. Please note that van support is limited on this trip due to the lack of access vehicles have to the trails.
“I walk regularly and enjoy the feeling of achievement I get from a good hike.”
Varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.Read more on our Activity Levels
