We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”

Day by Day
Take your first walk along the Inn River and stop for lunch on a quiet terrace, with a table overlooking the valley of medieval fortresses that once defended Passau. This afternoon, retreat to the boat for introductory cocktails.
Stroll the countryside hills adorned with centuries-old walking paths, fruit orchards, and views of the Inn and Ilz rivers. After lunch, explore the landmarks of Passau’s Old Town with our local guide.
Walk "The Way of Princes", an ancient route that once connected various riverside towns. Discover Linz this evening during a private guided tour, followed by dinner at one of the town’s best addresses.
Enjoy breakfast accompanied by views of the Stift Melk, before taking a tour of this Baroque Abbey. Then, walk a stretch of the river called the Wachau, featuring picturesque terraced hillsides.
Embark on a walk up into the forests and vineyards west of the city, where we’ll enjoy lunch at a seasonal restaurant run by local, independent wine producers.
Begin the day's walk in Slovakia’s Little Carpathians mountain range (allegedly one of Dracula's old stomping grounds!). After a hearty hiker’s lunch, head into Bratislava’s Old Town for a well-deserved pivo.
Have breakfast on the deck as Budapest's cityscape floats majestically into view. A casual walking tour will highlight the city’s main sights, with enough time in the afternoon to explore the city on your own.
Following breakfast, we part company this morning. We highly recommend a few more days in dynamic Budapest, but if you must depart immediately, an airport transfer organized by our ship is readily available with prior reservation.
Soak in the history, aboard and ashore.
Uniworld's S.S. Maria Theresa
The 75-stateroom Maria Theresa was built in 2015, and earned the “Best New River Ship” award by Cruise Critic editors in the same year. A baroque homage to the former Austrian empress from bow to stern, the S.S Maria Theresa is among the newest and most lavish river boats on the Danube. Suites are individually decorated; all B&R cabins boast French balconies affording wide views of the riverscapes. The vessel is fully airconditioned, and features high-quality beds and linens, marble bathrooms with Occitane accessories, and a knowledgeable, professional crew of 50-plus. The restaurant, often resupplied with fresh regional ingredients en route, offers an array of beautifully prepared starters and entrees, as well as a sumptuous buffet breakfast, all in a panoramic setting. We loved exploring the Danube, the elegance of the Chateau Herlac, the tour of the monastery at Melk, it was an unforgettable trip!—Mark Barsanti
We never wanted to be the biggest travel company in the world, just the best.
— George Butterfield
Most of the walking on this trip is flat to gently rolling on riverside paths or marked forest routes. Surfaces are reliable: gravel, hard-packed dirt, and the occasional paved section.
“I enjoy going for a good walk and can even handle an incline or two.”
Relatively flat, with occasional steeper climbs.Read more on our Activity Levels

Spend more time in Eastern Europe
We absolutely recommend that you arrive in Munich at least a day before your trip begins, as the Bavarian capital has much to offer the visitor, first-timer or otherwise. Similarly, at the end of your voyage, Budapest is a marvelous city that easily merits an extra day, if not more. Also consider renting a car to discover the Hungarian countryside, from azure Lake Balaton to the picturesque wine country of the Tokaj district.
