- Difficulty Level
Level 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Biking Between the Capitals of Cool
We’ve plotted the perfect course from one energetic European gem to another, and we’re the only ones riding between them. Along the way, sink neck deep into the history of UNESCO Dresden, spend not one night but two enjoying the serene bike paths of the Spreewald (and sumptuous spa of our hotel), then cap it off by riding to the door of our hotel in the city of Spires.

Delight in the history…
Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Prague, Prague
A former monastery cum 5-star urban retreat, the Augustine is nestled at the foot of Prague Castle, has an extensive spa, and exudes the serenity of its ecclesiastical past. Nip at an archangel cocktail in the former refectory, now hotel bar, and reflect on how good life can be.
Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski, Dresden
Nestled between the baroque landmarks of the Semper Opera House and Dresden Castle, the Kempinski Taschenbergpalais has a location that is second to none. Beyond the imposing façade of this meticulously reconstructed royal palace lie equally regal amenities: sitting rooms, relaxing courtyards, a spa, and a sublime fifth-floor swimming pool.
Hotel Zur Bleiche, Burg/Spreewald
Set amid the peaceful Spreewald forest, the 18thC Hotel Zur Bleiche was converted to a luxurious Resort Spa & Wellness Centre in 1992. It’s all about sustainability and relaxation here; the hotel has neither clocks nor signs on the walls, inviting guests to unwind and discover the space on their own. Its health facilities are top-notch; frequented by prominent figures of German politics, showbiz and even by the world-renowned Bayern Munich football club.
This was my first B&R trip and first biking trip ever. I was so impressed by all the little details and the general experience. My most memorable moment was simply getting to know the people on the trip and taking part in the rides. Our trip was amazing—it was fun, active, adventurous, unique and a great way to see a new part of the world.— Robin Storfer
The riding is mostly flat and a good part of it is on dedicated bike paths. In Spree Forest, the riding is very level, where riders could be required to push their bikes over a couple of low wooden bridges. In Saxony we bike along the river Elbe, which is virtually flat. Options for more biking are available on some days. Given the variety of road surfaces, B&R recommends a hybrid bike for all but the most confident riders.

Berlin is a great city. Reborn and rejuvenated, it is well worth spending an extra day or two here—especially if you are at all interested in architecture or the arts. We’ll happily recommend a city guide if you want an insider’s tour of Berlin beyond what you’ll see on your trip.
