Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.

Day by Day
Walk toward the classic Basque town of Sare alternating between dirt and paved roads passing through small villages. This evening, we are treated to a lovely dinner and our first of many wonderful Basque meals together.
Take an exciting walk in the countryside surrounding Bidarray. This evening, watch a game of pelota with the locals in Bidarrya’s fronton—a great opportunity to witness just how passionate the Basques are about this sport!
Bid au revoir to the French Basque country and hola to Spain! Our route takes us right into San Sebastian. Along the way, stop for a peek at the Albaola Museum and its reconstructed 16th-century Basque whaling ship on display! Tonight, a classic Basque supper!
Set out by foot directly from your hotel to summit and join up with the Camino de Santiago. You'll be spoiled by constant coastal views along this gorgeous hike. Check in at Akelarre and spend the rest of the evening exploring San Sebastián on your own.
Head to the coastal town of Getaria famed for supplying the freshest fish to the region. Pause at the oldest winery in town before wrapping up your walk at the UNESCO Flysch & Karst geological site. Tonight, you dine at your hotel's three-star Michelin restaurant.
After breakfast at the hotel this morning, you'll be driven the one hour to Bilboa Airport or downtown. Adiós!
From coastal France to stunning San Sebastián.
Lasala Plaza, San Sebastian
At the centre of it all, Lasala Plaza offers 58 rooms with amazing views and a crowning rooftop pool. A beautiful medley of historic architecture and modern design, the hotel’s interior is reflective of the seaside culture, which you can read about extensively in the well-stocked library where books about local art and culture are a plenty.
Obsessive striving is the modus operandi of Akelarre hotel, a cutting-edge property that began as a 3-star Michelin restaurant and has since grown to include accommodation (5-star, naturally). Straddling the coastal hills just outside of San Sebastián, the design hotel is a definite head-turner, but we suggest pivoting toward the outdoors as well, where regal views are truly enchanting.
Auberge Ostape, Bidarray
The Auberge is a beautifully restored traditional Basque farm that dates back to the 17th century. It offers pastoral tranquillity and dramatic views of the surrounding emerald hills. Antiques fill the hotel and the refined restaurant and outdoor pool are both highlights.
There were so many incredible events on this trip. And we had a tremendous guide—enthusiastic, knowledgeable, totally attentive to details, and such a delightful person.— Patty Richmond
Hikes on this trip range from moderately challenging to challenging. Rocky, uneven terrain presents itself at times. The average distance per day is 13 km (8 mi.) on mountain trails (3-5 hours of hiking).

Spend more time in Basque Country
Bilbao is a vibrant and compact city that allows for easy exploration on foot—we highly recommend spending time there after your B&R trip. The opening of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in 1997 sparked a renaissance within the city that has put Bilbao back on the map culturally and artistically. The city boasts several other museums of note, an attractive old quarter that is ideal for strolling through, and some fantastic restaurant/bars.
