We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”
Walking through Basque Country
Spanning over the French/Spanish border, Basque Country is a region with an incredibly unique personality. Cited as one of Europe’s oldest civilizations, the Basques have valiantly managed to preserve their rich culture over time. After time in beautiful Biarritz, our journey begins when we embark for the heart of French Basque Country, where we follow quaint country roads and trails offering splendid mountain views. Finish on the idyllic Spanish Basque coast, where we trade mountains for ocean and our favourite seaside hotspot, San Sebastián. Whether it’s the breathtaking scenery, the surreal architecture, the exceptional cuisine, or the incredibly hospitable people, the charm of Basque Country is bound to leave a lasting impression.

Day by Day
Walk the Grand Route 10, taking in the amazing views from the Pyrenean summits and mountain villages as you head toward Ainhao. This evening, we are treated to a lovely dinner and our first of many wonderful Basque meals together.
Take an exciting loop walk in the countryside surrounding Bidarray. This evening, watch a game of pelota with the locals in Bidarrya’s fronton—a great opportunity to witness just how passionate the Basques are about this sport!
Bid au revoir to the French Basque country and hola to Spain! Hike out of Tolosa and into the verdant hills of Santa Marina. Indulge in at our friends, Pello and Maite's farm, where they teach us about their prized Euskal Txerri pigs.
Ascend from the Bidania Valley and head toward a special lunch in Aizarna. Check in at the Maria Cristina and spend the rest of the evening exploring San Sebastián on your own.
Take a lovely coastal walk toward the small port town of Pasaia. Along the way, stop for a peek at the Albaola Museum and its reconstructed 16th-century Basque whaling ship on display!
After breakfast at the hotel this morning, you may depart at your leisure. Adiós!
From coastal France to stunning San Sebastián.
Auberge Ostape, Bidarray
The Auberge is a beautifully restored traditional Basque farm that dates back to the 17th century. It offers pastoral tranquillity and dramatic views of the surrounding emerald hills. Antiques fill the hotel and the refined restaurant and outdoor pool are both highlights. View hotel website »
Iriarte Jauregia, Guipúzcoa
This boutique hotel is set in a restored 17th-century palace and prides itself on its simple décor and delicate cuisine. Seemingly lost in the middle of the Basque countryside, this hotel provides prime access to some of the region’s best hiking trails. View hotel website »
Maria Cristina, San Sebastián
After a year-long renovation, the Grand Old Dame of the Basque Coast has reopened, more elegant than ever—and wired for the 21st century. A member of the Starwood Collection, the Maria Cristina offers equally quick access to both historic city centre and beach, with all the trappings of Belle Epoque splendour within its walls! Spend more time in Basque Country
Bilbao is a vibrant and compact city that allows for easy exploration on foot—we highly recommend spending time there after your B&R trip. The opening of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in 1997 sparked a renaissance within the city that has put Bilbao back on the map culturally and artistically. The city boasts several other museums of note, an attractive old quarter that is ideal for strolling through, and some fantastic restaurant/bars.
