Past Project
Rice production with Ozuchi village
Japan
Overview
Nimaida Noboru is the sole rice farmer and caretaker of an almost-abandoned agricultural site in Ozuchi, a remote village nestled in the Noto mountains of Japan. After returning to his childhood village, Nimaida dedicated himself to preserving his family’s land and the traditional farming practices that have been passed down through generations. Throughout the year, he opens his farm to agriculture students, volunteers and tour groups, offering them an opportunity to learn about sustainable farming and the cultural heritage of the area. His efforts not only keep the agricultural traditions alive but also help sustain the local community by educating visitors and engaging them with the rich history of Japanese farming.
How We Support
Butterfield & Robinson supports Nimaida’s mission through our Slow Fund initiative, which provides financial aid and resources to sustainable, community-driven projects. The Slow Fund has donated $5,000 per annum to Nimaida’s efforts. We also include a stop at Ozuchi on our Japan Walking trip, further supporting the preservation of this historic site and raising awareness about the importance of agricultural heritage.

Visitor Program Development
B&R supports Nimaida’s efforts by providing financial resources to expand the visitors’ program. This initiative offers agricultural students, volunteers and travellers to experience firsthand the traditional farming techniques that have been essential to the region for centuries.

Supporting Growth
Through an annual donation of $5,000, the Slow Fund supports Nimaida in expanding his sustainable farming activities. This funding enables him to maintain his land, produce rice and offer educational experiences to those who visit, ensuring the continued success of his conservation efforts.

Connecting Travellers with Ozuchi
By including Ozuchi in our Japan Walking trip, B&R enhances the visibility of Nimaida’s work and raises awareness about the importance of preserving traditional farming methods. The trip provides a unique opportunity for travellers to engage directly with the project and gain a deeper understanding of these farming practices in a rapidly modernizing world.
