Past Project
Fostering Freedom Through Mobility with #BIKEYGEES e.V.
Berlin, Germany
Overview
#BIKEYGEES e.V. is a Berlin-based initiative dedicated to empowering refugee women through cycling. Now in its seventh year, the project provides cycling training to refugee women and is open to all women and girls looking to develop their cycling skills. At its core, #BIKEYGEES believes that mobility is a fundamental step toward independence and empowerment, helping women build confidence and navigate their new surroundings with freedom.
How We Support
Through The Slow Fund, Butterfield & Robinson proudly supported #BIKEYGEES by committing US$10,000 annually from 2021 to 2023. This funding helped expand access to cycling education, ensuring more women and girls could participate in the program. By backing this initiative, B&R contributed to fostering independence, community, and sustainable transportation solutions for refugee women.

Hands-on cycling training
#BIKEYGEES training sessions provide women with practical cycling experience, teaching them how to ride safely and confidently. Our support helped fund these sessions, ensuring refugee women had access to bicycles, training, and mentorship from experienced female instructors in a supportive environment.

Multilingual traffic & safety education
Beyond cycling skills, participants learned essential traffic rules in multiple languages, equipping them with the knowledge to ride safely in an urban setting. The funding helped make these lessons accessible, breaking down language barriers and ensuring women felt secure and informed on the road.

Fostering confidence and community
All training sessions took place in a welcoming, all-female space, encouraging participants to support one another while developing their skills. The funding helped #BIKEYGEES build not just confident cyclists, but also a strong community of empowered women who found independence and joy through cycling. By supporting #BIKEYGEES, we are proud to contribute to a program that transformed lives, promoted sustainability, and created new opportunities for refugee women.
