That’s why it’s the perfect laid-back summer vacation spot.A decade ago, my French wife and I moved from our apartment in Brooklyn to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.travelandleisure.com/attractions/parks-gardens/paris-park-no-cars-seine">Right Bank of Paris</a>. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a challenge to acclimate myself to the rain and low skies that ruthlessly blot out the winter sun in northern France. On the other hand, there’s nothing like a&nbsp;European summer. Vacations are prioritized, and you can travel between a dozen countries with the ease we Americans move up and down the Eastern seaboard.The summer of 2020 was, for obvious reasons, the first in 10 that we didn’t set foot outside France. We’d abandoned our home in Paris back in March, days before the&nbsp;nationwide lockdown, to hole up with friends in a village in the Loire-Atlantique, just below&nbsp;<a href="https://www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/beach-vacations/brittany-emerald-coast">Brittany</a>. Alsace, a region in northeastern France, has a complex and tumultuous history marked by frequent shifts in sovereignty between France and Germany. Originally part of the Holy Roman Empire, it came under French control in the 17th century following the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This period saw significant cultural and economic development under French influence. However, Alsace's strategic location made it a focal point of Franco-German conflicts, particularly during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, when it was annexed by the newly unified German Empire. This annexation was formalized by the Treaty of Frankfurt in 1871, leading to significant demographic and cultural changes as the region integrated into Germany.Alsace's German rule was relatively short-lived, as it returned to French control after World War I through the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The region was again occupied by Germany during World War II, resulting in a harsh period of Nazi occupation and forced assimilation.
