What the Camino taught me after guiding 100 trips around the world

Here, Julie Ritchie, a member of our Traveller Experience team, shares an unexpected discovery while guiding a trip on the Camino de Santiago. In this personal reflection on energy, nature and the quiet magic of walking an ancient path, Julie, who has guided almost 100 trips on all corners of the planet, explains how she fell in love with one of the world’s oldest pilgrim routes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have been guiding Butterfield &amp; Robinson trips for more than 30 years. I am happiest out in the wildest places of the world—the remote corners of Patagonia, the high trails of Switzerland, the jagged peaks of Nepal. But earlier this year, I guided one of our <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/europe/spain/camino-de-santiago">Camino de Santiago</a> trips, and something surprising happened. I fell in love with it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Why the Camino de Santiago Still Surprises Even Experienced Guides&nbsp;</h2>The Camino de Santiago is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes that cross much of Europe and converge in Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. The nine main traditional Camino routes that pilgrims walk pass through Spain, France and Portugal, and the most well-known route—the Camino Francés—begins in France and stretches roughly 800 kilometres across northern Spain.&nbsp; Many people walk just a section over one to two weeks, while others take four to six weeks to complete the full journey.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As I expected from the legendary route, the walks were beautiful in a quiet, simple way. Rolling countryside. Peaceful forests. Stone villages that seem to have settled into the land over centuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;There was a gentle rhythm that I and the group quickly fell into, a natural inclination on a route walked by millions of pilgrims across thousands of years. And because it is Spain, each day carries warmth, generous hospitality, comforting food and very good wine. (I even came home with a new favourite white, Albariño, which my husband and I have now adopted as our house wine.)&nbsp;&nbsp;But for me, the real magic was its energy. The Camino has a pulse, a sense of being held by something ancient and alive. And this is what makes this tranquil path so captivating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Ancient Paths, Ley Lines and the Camino’s Spiritual Pull&nbsp;</h2>Many believe the Camino follows a series of ley lines, the energetic currents that some (me included) believe crisscross the Earth and link ancient sacred sites. Whether you believe that or not, there’s a feeling on the Camino that’s hard to ignore. It’s quiet, steady and very present. It’s different from the big, dramatic energy I feel in wild places like Patagonia or Nepal. Those places feel vast and powerful. The Camino feels personal, almost human, shaped by centuries of people walking, hoping, letting go and moving forward.&nbsp;&nbsp;The feeling was subtle, but once we talked about it as a group, we all noticed it more. Thoughts would pop into our minds out of nowhere. Certain moments felt gently meaningful, without being heavy. At the Cruz de Ferro, where pilgrims traditionally leave behind what they no longer want to carry, my phone screen suddenly changed to a photo of a close friend who had died just months earlier. It didn’t feel like a coincidence. From that point on, I felt I was walking the Camino for her as well, and I left with a clear message from her: “Look out for my daughter.” It was quiet, deeply powerful, and unlike anything I’ve experienced elsewhere.&nbsp;&nbsp;Given the network of these currents, it only makes sense that they foster togetherness, particularly in a place like this, where pilgrims come from all around the world and form an unspoken bond thanks to a shared purpose.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Why the Camino de Santiago Still Calls Us Back&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>People walk this path for countless reasons. To process grief. To mark a change. To let something go. To celebrate. To reconnect with themselves or with something greater. And in doing so, they form a collective heartbeat. You can read books about the Camino and watch films, as I had before hitting the road, but the real experience was better than anything I imagined.&nbsp;&nbsp;I’ve guided over 100 trips on seven continents and found the Camino both humbling and beautiful. And now I understand why so many people feel pulled to walk it. There’s something that lives in the land itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;“El Camino te da lo que necesitas, no lo que quieres.” It’s a phrase shared among pilgrims on the trail. The Camino gives you what you need, not what you want. I know now that that is true.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Thanks to the healing rhythm of long walks, and the feeling of spending days wrapped in the powerful energy of nature, the Camino spoke to me.
