Supporting education in Peru with the Sol y Luna Foundation

When people think of Peru, Machu Picchu often comes to mind. But at Butterfield &amp; Robinson, we know that beyond this iconic world wonder, it’s the people and culture of the region that truly bring it to life.&nbsp;We’ve been adventuring in Peru for decades—most recently during our <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/get-inspired/travel-journal/the-magic-of-peru-behind-the-scenes-of-our-annual-guide-trip-">Annual Guide Trip</a>—and over the years, we’ve had the privilege of forming deep connections with the passionate individuals who shape this vibrant region. Among them are Franz Schilter and Petit Miribel, owners of the Sol y Luna Hotel (where our travellers stay on both <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/latin-america/peru">Small Group and Bespoke trips</a>), and founders of the <a href="https://asociacionsolyluna.com/">Sol y Luna Foundation.</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;For decades, Franz and Petit have dedicated themselves to alleviating extreme poverty by providing love, care and education in Peru’s rural communities. Through the Sol y Luna Foundation, they have formed a network of transformative initiatives, including the Sol y Luna Intercultural School, Paqari (for special needs support), the Sol y Luna Home and Roots &amp; Wings (for continued education).

In Cusco, 47.5% of children do not attend school, making it the region with the highest number of children without education in Peru. Upon learning of Franz Schilter’s passing earlier this year, we wanted to honour his important legacy. As Peru is a region close to our hearts—and in line with B&amp;R’s ongoing commitment to ethical tourism and sustainability—it was a natural choice to partner with the Sol y Luna Foundation through our <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/the-slow-fund">Slow Fund</a>.&nbsp;The Slow Fund allows us to make a meaningful and tangible impact on the regions we visit. Through the Fund’s Education &amp; Equity pillar, we provided a $5,000 contribution to the Sol y Luna Foundation—supporting their continued efforts to uplift and educate underserved children in Peru’s Sacred Valley. This contribution will directly sponsor a child’s education for the 2025 school year.&nbsp;We are proud to support such a valuable organization and to play a small role in helping further their mission for those who need it most. As Experience Designer <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/meet-the-designers/stephanie-gulledge">Stephanie Gulledge</a> puts it, “Although it was the majestic mountains that first drew me to Peru, it is really the connection with the locals that brings me back. I am so proud to work with B&amp;R in supporting their special community together.”

Want to see Machu Picchu after the tourists have gone? We find the best way is to sleep next door at the stunning Sanctuary Lodge. During waking hours you’ll explore the ruins of the Sacred Valley and hike the cloud forests of the Inca Trail before hopping the Hiram Bingham Train back to Cusco for a final night dinner in an ancient Incan palace.While this is a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list activity, the Inca Trail itself is a challenging hike without any options for easy-outs or modifications. There is no road or helicopter support, making rescues challenging and reserved for emergencies.
