The behind-the-scenes story of how B&R’s 60th anniversary Grand Journey was made

To celebrate B&amp;R’s birthday and 60 years of epic adventure, we wanted to create the ultimate journey. Introducing Around the World in 60 Days—six unforgettable trips stitched together with just the right amount of B&amp;R flair to make this an experience unlike any other. &nbsp;From Oaxaca to Rajasthan to Cappadocia and beyond, this bold collection is&nbsp;designed so that travellers can circumnavigate the globe with us on one continuous journey or choose their favourite place (or places!) to join in on the celebrations.&nbsp;Chief Experience Officer Kristi Elborne and Senior Director of Sales and Trip Design Christina Cain explain how this once-in-a-lifetime collection—our 60th Anniversary Grand Journey—came alive and what travellers can expect from this exclusive experience.&nbsp;

Where did the idea for Around the World in 60 Days come from?&nbsp;Kristi: For many months, we had been connecting with our Guides, Experience Designers and other key members of the team&nbsp;to talk about what would be a meaningful celebration for our 60th anniversary. Then George Butterfield came forward and said, “What if we do something really beautiful that ties six trips together over 60 days?” We loved the simplicity of it, the ease, and the creative license to do something extraordinary in the six destinations that we chose. We were among the first travel providers to design these epic Grand Journey-style trips, the goal was to make this the most epic of them all.&nbsp;

How did you settle on the six destinations?&nbsp;Kristi: The key consideration was the clarity of an around-the-world experience. We looked at flight paths and how easy it is to get from one country to the next. We looked at seasonality. If it was going to be a continuous 60 days in the spring, we needed spring to be an appropriate time to visit those six regions. We looked at key holidays and time periods that would influence people towards or away from regions at that time. Once that puzzle came together, then it was time to ask, how are we really going to put a spotlight on these regions?&nbsp;What can travellers expect from these trips?&nbsp;Christina: Heritage highlights, exciting new and rediscovered corners, exclusive access to some killer events while giving back to the communities—this is all woven into the fabric of these journeys. I'm most excited for travellers to experience these stunning destinations in a genuinely unique way. We've dusted off the map in several countries we haven't been in a while—Mexico, India and Turkey—while giving a new twist to beloved haunts Vietnam, Morocco and Burgundy.&nbsp;

The collection was designed so that people can commit to 60 days, but also can join for just one trip, if they wish, correct?&nbsp;Kristi: Exactly, do one, do three, do all six. The 60 days includes travel time between each trip, breaks to get you from A to B and recuperate and recover. We plan to have a single price for all six trips, but they will be priced individually so travellers can mix and match as they wish.&nbsp;We worked with the Experience Designers for each of these regions to deliver something unlike any other trip we offer—things you can’t do anywhere else. And for each trip in the collection there is a component of giving back to the local communities who so generously host us as visitors, which is core to our ethos.&nbsp;&nbsp;What are some of the differences in this particular collection of trips that travellers will experience?&nbsp;Kristi: On the Vietnam trip, we are spending three nights on the Aqua Mekong, an incredibly intimate luxury experience sailing the Mekong River. In Morocco, travellers will experience an exclusive tented camp stay in the Sahara, that includes a charter flight out of the desert, and we’re ending the trip in Casablanca, which is full of vibrant energy. The Türkiye trip includes sailing on a brand new yacht, while India’s itinerary has experiences that before this collection have only been possible with Bespoke trips. And the Mexico trip explores the very best of Oaxaca with stunning biking and hiking routes.&nbsp;

And the complete journey ends in Burgundy, B&amp;R’s second home?&nbsp;Christina: That’s right. There are plenty of celebrations woven into the itinerary to commemorate the end of the round-the-world journey as well as B&amp;R’s big birthday. From cocktails at the Butterfields’ house in Beaune to a visit to our atelier to meet with the team behind the scenes who support the magic that happens on the road. We’ve also convinced two Beaune personalities to come out of retirement for this trip. Jacques Lardière was the head winemaker and general manager of the world-famous Maison Louis Jadot for over 40 years and will be hosting a wine tasting for us. And Chantal Leroux, one of B&amp;R’s oldest friends, is a local historian, and will lead us on a very unique tour of the city and Hôtel-Dieu, which dates back to the 15th century.&nbsp;&nbsp;What’s been the most fun part of bringing this once-in-a-lifetime experience to life?&nbsp;&nbsp;Christina: Seeing these ideas come to life has been incredible. What was born from a spontaneous suggestion by George about a year ago has now come to fruition. Our Experience Designers have pulled out all the stops and have designed six remarkable trips to celebrate this important milestone.
