The Northern Adriatic, that stretch of dramatic coastline and island-scattered sea above Split, is exactly that: a region of extraordinary beauty that's nearly impossible to explore well without a vessel to call home.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our journey aboard the Agape Rose was built around that geography. It begins in <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/europe/slovenia">Slovenia</a>—a country having its moment right now, and for good reason—before boarding a 48-metre private yacht and spending seven nights threading south through waters most have never seen. Two countries, one vessel, eleven days.&nbsp;To shape it, B&amp;R turned to two of its most trusted Experience Designers in the region: <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/meet-the-designers/erin-reed">Erin Reed</a>, who has been crafting B&amp;R journeys across Europe for 20 years, and <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/meet-the-designers/laura-benn">Laura Benn</a>, who has spent nearly a decade shaping how travellers experience Croatia and Slovenia. Here, together, they walk us through what they built.&nbsp;

<h3>This trip pairs Slovenia with a Croatian sea journey. How did that combination come about?&nbsp;</h3>LB: We've had some really successful years in Croatia, and travellers have been asking us for more by-sea trips in the region. The Northern Adriatic is just genuinely hard to do well on a land-based itinerary—there aren't the right hotels to stitch these islands together. So, the question became: how do we take the Agape Rose, a yacht we know and trust, and bring it somewhere we haven't taken it on the small group side? Slovenia was the natural connector.&nbsp;&nbsp;ER: Slovenia is the beating heart of the trip. Starting there lets us set a foundation—our travellers have real access to local people we've known for years, people who are at this point friends of B&amp;R. That warmth sets a tone. Then you board the boat and you're cruising down the Adriatic coast.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h3>Walk us through the route. How do Slovenia and Croatia each earn their place?&nbsp;</h3>LB: The word that keeps coming to mind is contrast. You start in the Slovenian mountains—Ljubljana, then Lake Bled, dramatic Alpine landscapes. From there you move through the Karst region, through the Škocjan Caves, before crossing into Istria and arriving in Rovinj. Then you board the yacht in Pula and everything shifts. Every day on the water looks different. By the end, you've moved through three completely distinct landscapes.&nbsp;&nbsp;ER: And the two countries are genuinely different. Culturally, historically, in how people host. In Slovenia there's a warmth and intention to the way people welcome you. In Croatia, things move at a different rhythm—more relaxed, more fluid, which is its own kind of charm. Either way, the local connections we've spent time building are what unlock the real experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h3>Tell us about the Agape Rose. Why this vessel?&nbsp;</h3>LB: I went to Croatia in March specifically to look for alternatives, because I wanted to be certain. I came back having found nothing that works as well. She was built in 2017 and just came out of a full refit in 2025, so everything is fresh. At 48 metres, she's generous without being overwhelming—exactly right for a small group.&nbsp;ER: A typical day on board starts with breakfast whenever you're ready—your private chef has laid out a spread and you come down when you come down. Then it's off with your guides: a bike ride on Pag island, a hike through ancient ruins above the sea on Cres, a walking tour of Zadar's medieval walls. You'll usually have one meal off the boat each day. In the afternoon the boat is yours—a massage, yoga on the back deck, a swim.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>What does this itinerary show guests that they couldn't find another way?&nbsp;</h3>LB: The island of Cres is one I'm particularly excited about. It's just genuinely hard to get to—long ferry, long drive—and the boat makes it effortless. Then there's Pag, which looks completely unlike anything else in the Adriatic: barren, almost otherworldly, a stark desert island sitting right beside islands that are lush and green. You could never include it on a land-based itinerary because there's almost no accommodation. And Zadar—we have a local guide there who just completed her PhD on the city's fortified walls, and there's a permanent art installation called the Sea Organ, where the tide moves through underwater pipes and the sea itself plays music. You sit on the waterfront and listen. There's nothing else quite like it.&nbsp;ER: The Kornati Islands are another highlight. Around 140 islands, no permanent settlements, a protected National Park—we anchor there and swim and take out the water toys. It's one of the densest archipelagos in the Mediterranean and most people have never heard of it. That's the whole point.&nbsp;

<h3>The culinary experience sounds like its own journey. What should guests know?&nbsp;</h3>ER: The first day sets the tone. We ride out to the farm of our local partner Miha's family, just outside Ljubljana. It's a real working farm—you're sitting beside tractors, his father is pouring žganje, the local fruit brandy, his mother and sister and aunt are bringing out the food. Long, shared, seasonal plates. It's one of those lunches that stays with you. The next day there's Mateja's farm near Lake Bled—she brings guests into her greenhouse, cuts vegetables from the garden right in front of you, and prepares something beautifully simple. Then once you're on the boat, you have a private chef for seven nights: five-star, but shaped entirely around the group—their preferences, their rhythms. On Day 3 in Rovinj, guests are taken by boat to hidden wine cellars built into the old city walls—a tradition going back centuries, fishermen knocking on doors in the off-season for food and drink. Not fancy. Just the best kind of evening.&nbsp;<h3>When you think about luxury on a sea-based trip, what does it actually mean?&nbsp;</h3>ER: Luxury is unpacking once. Luxury is having access to coves and bays completely unreachable by land. Luxury is a whole crew plus your B&amp;R guides looking after you from the moment you wake up. It's swimming in the Northern Adriatic with no other boats around, no other people. And there's one more thing: when you're travelling by sea, time warps. The pace slows in a way that's quite rare. Part of why this trip is eleven days is to give people the chance to actually enter that pace—to arrive in Slovenia and start to decompress, then really sink into it once they're on the boat. Slow time is a luxury in itself.&nbsp;LB: For me it's space. Space to not think about anything. You board the yacht and everything is looked after. You can go for a swim, sit on the deck, not make a single decision.
