In 2012, Nathan Lane packed a bike and flew to <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/asia/sri-lanka">Sri Lanka</a> on his own. He’d spent years riding through Southeast Asia for Butterfield &amp; Robinson, and this island brought him back to what he loved most about those early trips: quiet country roads, a roadside vendor slicing fresh pineapple, a reclining Buddha with no one else in sight. He came home with a simple message. Some destinations feel overwhelming before you even book. There’s so much to see that it’s hard to know where to start, and the planning alone can stop you from going. Sri Lanka takes that pressure off. 1. See the whole country in one trip

Sri Lanka has the depth that draws so many travellers to South Asia: centuries-old temples, fragrant curries and colour on every corner. It also makes settling in easy, with warm hospitality and high standards from the kitchen to the hotel room.Faith here is woven together rather than divided. On a single morning ride you might pass a Buddhist temple, a Hindu kovil, a mosque and a Catholic church, then watch neighbours of every faith meet at the same fish market. Along the way you’ll visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, walk the walls of a Portuguese fort and stand beneath a sacred banyan tree. Then there’s the food. Expectations for Sri Lankan cuisine run high, and egg hoppers at breakfast are proof they’re met.

2. A rich culture you can settle into

This is what a Sri Lanka cycling trip should feel like. On many days of our Sri Lanka Biking trip, you clip in at one hotel and ride straight to the next, with no transfer at the start or finish. That means more time on the bike, in the countryside, and less time in a vehicle. The riding is mostly flat, with longer options for anyone who wants extra kilometres.The places you ride to are worth arriving at. You’ll start in two freestanding villas, each with its own private plunge pool, then settle into an Aman housed in a colonial building. Even the journey south is a highlight: a small charter plane flies you from the hills to the coast, and you ride from the airstrip around a lagoon to lunch by the sea.“Transport is usually the part of a trip we try to gloss over,” says Nathan. “Here, it’s a highlight.”

3. Ride from one stay to the next

“Every time I’ve been to Sri Lanka, an elephant has wandered in front of me,” says Nathan. The island is one of the last places on earth where Asian elephants still roam truly wild. On his first ride across the country, Nathan came around a bend to find cars stopped and women in bright saris standing at the roadside. Out in the rice paddy, a mother elephant and her calf were wandering wherever they pleased. We can’t promise you that moment, but on this island it’s always possible.Sri Lanka is also one of Asia’s great birdwatching destinations. Saranga, the bike mechanic on our trips, is a quiet, devoted birder who rides at the back of the group. If you ride with him, he’ll stop to point out a kingfisher he hasn’t seen all year.“I didn’t know I was that into birding,” says Nathan. “But I love listening to somebody’s passion.”

4. Wildlife that finds you

For many North American travellers, the long flight keeps Sri Lanka off the radar. That’s exactly what makes it special. Plenty of people at your next dinner party will have cycled in Burgundy or Morocco.
