Christina Cain did not want a party for her 50th birthday. She wanted <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/europe/portugal">Portugal</a>: nine days with her 14-year-old daughter, Luna, and nowhere else they needed to be.After 22 years at B&amp;R—now as Senior Director of Sales &amp; Trip Design—Christina has made a career of helping travellers experience a place more deeply. Luna, it seems, has grown up with that same sensibility.“She’s a bit of a B&amp;R baby,” says Christina. “Luna’s grown up being exposed to a lot of what we do, and, perhaps more importantly, to the nuances of travel and the importance of finding experiences that feel genuinely connected to a place.”

For this trip, that connection began with João Carvalho, one of B&amp;R’s Experience Designers in Portugal. João knows the country with the familiarity most people reserve for their own neighbourhood, and with the affection of someone eager to share it. He joined Christina and Luna in Lisbon, introducing them to favourite places, trusted local people and the small details that give a journey its character.“Having someone who is so deeply connected to Portugal, and so incredibly proud and passionate about his home, show us his favourite places and introduce us to the people and experiences he loves was pretty special,” says Christina. “It gave the trip a level of authenticity and personal connection that can only come from a personal history in the region.”It is also, in many ways, how B&amp;R finds its inspiration.“We’re not using AI to decide where our travellers should stay or Googling a list of the ‘best things to do,’” Christina says. “We go there ourselves. We stay in the hotels, ride the roads, try the restaurants, meet the people and sometimes get it wrong before we get it right.”

<h3>Portugal, by Doing</h3>Some of the trip’s most memorable moments came not from simply seeing Portugal, but from <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/how-to-travel/small-group/biking">taking part in it</a>.Learning to sail on the Douro River, setting out directly from <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/trip/bespoke/porto-douro-valley-bespoke">Porto</a>, was one of them.“Being out on the water, learning the basics and seeing the city from a completely different perspective connected us to Portugal’s maritime history in a way that simply sightseeing never could,” Christina says. “It was one of those moments when you stop, look around and think, this is exactly why we travel.”Cycling into Sintra from the less-travelled back side offered another kind of arrival: gradual, active and full of anticipation.“We were pedalling through these incredible gardens, with glimpses of the landscape opening up around us, and then, almost teasingly, you’d catch a flash of the palace’s pastel colours peeking through at the top,” she says. “It was such a beautiful way to arrive, slowly, under your own power, with the sense that you were discovering the place rather than simply being delivered to it.”Portugal’s landscapes stayed with Luna, too. But it was São Lourenço do Barrocal, a restored estate shaped by its rural surroundings, that she remembers most clearly.“The roads in Portugal were really beautiful, but São Lourenço do Barrocal stayed with me most. It had so much green around it, beautiful views and a renovated farm. I liked that it felt different from a typical hotel.”

<h3>A Chance Encounter</h3>One of the trip’s most lasting moments came almost by accident. While exploring, Christina and Luna wandered into the workshop of a working bellmaker.“We literally just popped in while they were working, which made it feel so special,” Christina says. “We stepped into a working workshop and had the chance to watch the bells being made while the master chocalheiro explained the craft to us. He was incredibly passionate, with this real twinkle in his eye as he talked about what he does.”The bells belong to a UNESCO-recognized Portuguese tradition. Each is tuned to a distinct sound, allowing shepherds to recognize their own animals within a herd.“Being able to see that process firsthand, and to meet someone who was so deeply connected to the craft, made it feel incredibly authentic.”For Christina, that encounter captures what distinguished the trip: the opportunity to move beyond the expected and into the lived-in rhythms of a place.

<h3>More Than the Major Sights</h3>Looking back, Christina returns to the same idea.“As travel becomes more accessible, simply seeing the major sights isn’t necessarily what makes a trip memorable,” she says. “That doesn’t mean you skip Sintra or the famous cable cars in Lisbon, they’re famous for a reason. But it’s about going beyond checking the box and taking the photo. Travel is about experiencing a place through its people. In Portugal, that might mean stepping into a bellmaker’s workshop while he’s at work, sharing a moment in someone’s kitchen, or simply taking the time to chat with hotel staff—they’re often a treasure trove of local ideas and connections. You’re not just seeing Portugal, you’re getting a glimpse into how people live and preserve their traditions.”

What is one of your favourite on-trip memories?“On the Coastal Camino, we learned mid-trip that the group loved playing cards. We had a custom Camino-themed deck made and surprised them with it on the road. They used it constantly and it became one of their favourite memories from the whole journey.”

What is one of your favourite on-trip memories?“On a milestone 30th birthday trip, the guest's mother mentioned her son was passionate about football. We tracked down an official Portugal jersey printed with his name, a Cristiano Ronaldo mask, and a football. We then delivered them in the middle of a sweeping open field where the whole group could play together. The birthday boy said it was the best gift he'd ever received.”
