From Champagne cellars to Alsace vineyards: Inside a Bespoke 60th birthday journey in France

Here, our traveller Leslie reminisces about her 60th birthday celebration and how freeing it was to turn the planning over to Experience Designer <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/meet-the-designers/jerome-bore">Jerome Bore,</a> who created some momentous events in France for this group of 35.&nbsp;<h2>&nbsp;Crafting the Perfect Birthday Journey</h2>Leslie and her friends have formed a habit of travelling together to celebrate significant birthdays. They’ve done beach vacations and ski holidays, hiking trips and cruises. “The goal was to find something that included culture, activity, great food and wine—and of course each of our trips is expected to at least match the last, if not exceed it,” she says.&nbsp;So for her 60th birthday, Jerome Bore, one of our Experience Designers for <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/places-to-go/europe/france">France</a>, customized a <a href="https://www.butterfield.com/how-to-travel/bespoke">Bespoke</a> week that ensured the group would not only be popping celebratory bottles of Champagne in Champagne but also exploring the cultural history and distinct identity of Alsace.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Good times are all about the people around you, and when you're celebrating a landmark birthday, that’s even more about having the people you love the most around you and creating a memory that we will share forever,” says Leslie. The final number for this celebration was 35 attendees—a group size that opened up possibilities for Jerome in his planning.&nbsp;

<h2>Champagne Tastings, Vineyards, and Cycling Adventures</h2>“I instantly thought of some big Champagne houses like Moet Chandon, because they can make something beautiful happen. But I also wanted them to have access to a very small, low-key producer to have the best of both worlds,” Jerome explains.&nbsp;&nbsp;And so between guided rides on tranquil rural roads surrounded by flourishing vineyards, the group visited Moet’s cellar, essentially a subterranean town made of interconnected galleries of barrels vaults and rib vaults, and met with a fifth-generation winemaker in the village of Boursault who hosted a private tasting of her sustainably crafted Champagne and lunch on the boutique winery’s grounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jerome infused the itinerary with more intimate, but no less impactful, moments, too. Live music greeted Leslie and her friends at lunches and cocktails. During one stop at a winery in Alsace, the winemaker joined the group for a tasting and taught them how to sabre a bottle of bubbly. And the group was surprised with personalized cycling jerseys to commemorate the occasion for gathering.&nbsp;<h2>Surprises and Unforgettable Memories</h2>For Leslie, who typically handles all the planning, Jerome’s guidance and expertise was integral to creating an unforgettable experience. “As the outline organizer I had a sense of the where, when and how for the trip,” she says. “I was still blown away by how special each location and meal was. I wouldn't have even been able to come up with what B&amp;R put together for us in my wildest dreams.”&nbsp; &nbsp;He managed to sneak in a few surprises, too. “Leslie was really attentive to details. So she wanted to know, of course, what we would do on one particular evening that we were trying to keep secret,” Jerome says. With Leslie’s trust and Jerome’s magic, he pulled off an exceptionally memorable tasting—a bottle from her birth year.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the end, it was a rich and rounded experience for this group of travellers, one that Leslie says will be hard to top at the next milestone birthday. “After this trip I think it might be impossible,” she says.&nbsp;

Alsace, a region in northeastern France, has a complex and tumultuous history marked by frequent shifts in sovereignty between France and Germany. Originally part of the Holy Roman Empire, it came under French control in the 17th century following the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This period saw significant cultural and economic development under French influence. However, Alsace's strategic location made it a focal point of Franco-German conflicts, particularly during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, when it was annexed by the newly unified German Empire. This annexation was formalized by the Treaty of Frankfurt in 1871, leading to significant demographic and cultural changes as the region integrated into Germany.Alsace's German rule was relatively short-lived, as it returned to French control after World War I through the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The region was again occupied by Germany during World War II, resulting in a harsh period of Nazi occupation and forced assimilation. Following the Allied victory in 1945, Alsace was restored to France, where it has remained since.
