Best Camera Gear for an Active Travel Vacation

Experts + Insiders | Around The World | By Nicole McFadden

When packing for an active travel vacation, you don’t want to include any camera equipment that requires a fuss. You need the battery to last all day, and water protection in case of some rain or if you’re travelling by yacht! Ideal gear needs to be lightweight, compact, and, ideally, help to steady the camera in case you’re on the go. As an avid photographer, here are some of my favourite options that tick all the right boxes.

GoPro Hero 6

This video camera can handle anything that comes its way. It’s 100% waterproof, making it an ideal choice for particularly epic expeditions. Light and compact, it shoots in 4K and comes with advanced video stabilization, so you’ll never have to worry about shaky snaps again.

GoPro Karma Grip

Give your vacation clips an expert look with the GoPro Karma Grip, which ensures effortless and blur-free video. You can catch all the action by either gripping it in your hand, attaching it to your bag while hiking, or mounting it on your bike.

Sony A7Riii Mirrorless Camera

More compact than a DSLR, the Sony A7Riii shoots 4k video and comes with fast autofocus for professional-quality shots in a flash. Its long battery life ensures you’ll be snapping from morning to dusk.

Sony FE 16-35mm F4

You’ll want to capture the epic landscapes of your destination, and you’re going to need a wide-angle lens. The Sony FE 16-35 mm offers just that. Its dust and moisture resistance allows it to handle any environment from desert to rainforest. For a wider zoom or more versatile lens, the Sony FE 24-240mm is another great option.

Peak Design Capture Clip

Rid your neck of a cumbersome camera strap. This handy clip enables you to securely attach your device to your backpack strap, allowing for easy access while on the move. Its quick release design means you’ll never miss a photo opportunity because you were digging through your bag for your camera.

JOBY GorillaPod Focus Tripod

Say so long to the selfie stick. Wrappable legs allow you to attach this tripod to surrounding objects for the best shot. The stainless steel plates and rubber foot grips can take on the most rugged of landscapes, and its maneuverable and lightweight design makes packing it a cinch.

DJI Mavic Air Drone

The foldable design makes this drone super portable. With 4k shooting, a 3-axis gimbal, and low vibration, your filming looks skilled and smooth. The auto tracking feature allows you to have it follow along as you hike or cycle.

Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 AW II

Organize your gear with this sleek and multi-functional backpack. A designated pocket for your camera and built-in rain cover makes your equipment accessible while also keeping it protected. Additional storage allows room for cables, your smartphone, and a water bottle.
