As a company that is passionate about showing people the world, we at Butterfield & Robinson believe travel is the best form of education. There is no greater eye-opener than experiencing a culture firsthand—to delve into communities, to walk or cycle the land, to meet people and take a stab at speaking the language. By immersing ourselves in these moments we form a deeper understanding of the world around us.
In an effort to give back to communities that teach us, we’ve established the B&R Fund, an initiative that supports innovative projects by exceptional individuals on a local level. Recently, our Regional Director for Peru, Tyler Dillon, brought to our attention the efforts of Marie Helene, General Manager of the Sol Y Luna Hotel in the Sacred Valley (a familiar name for some B&R travellers who have done our Peru Walking trip), who is in the midst of building a school for local children.
Located next to the hotel, the school is the first of its kind in the valley and will offer a progressive curriculum. Many students are already enrolled for next year’s session, and the school’s capacity to manage more grades will expand as construction continues.
Inspired by Marie Helene’s vision, the B&R Fund is now committing financial support to the construction process—specifically the recreation spaces and art room. Additional contributions will occur based on a per traveller basis with our Peru Walking trip, with these funds directed towards the purchase of books, sports equipment and other school supplies. Naturally, we have reserved time on our itinerary to introduce travellers to this exciting project in person, should they wish to see it.
The building of this facility is an ambitious project, but we’re very familiar with the commitment of the people behind it. We strongly believe that their goal of developing a unique school in the midst of this remarkable land will have an enduring impact on the lives of these children and their families for generations to come.
We’d also like to point out, in light of recent events, that the B&R Fund also contributes to disaster relief the world over. Recently we donated money to Médecins Sans Frontières for its efforts in Haiti. We encourage B&R travellers interested in learning more about this vital organization to visit its international website at www.msf.org, and then select the appropriate national website based on your home country.
