We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”
A fascinating milieu of cultures
From the Alps of Slovenia to the coast of Croatia and a quick dip into Italy in between, this north-south journey immerses you in the region’s excellent biking and walking terrain, love of locally sourced food and appreciation for well-crafted wine. Local hosts and family-run properties give us a behind-the-curtain look at the culture, customs and history that shaped this region, while visits to vineyards, home-prepared meals and cobalt-blue lakes electrify our senses.

Day by Day
We meet in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana and head out for our first ride along countryside trails that lead us to Lake Bled. We enjoy a lakeside lunch followed by an afternoon cruise on a traditional wooden boat.
Pedal along alpine backroads to the beautiful Lago di Fusine where we pause for a picnic lunch. This evening, we visit one of the oldest houses in the region before dinner nearby.
We head to Vršič Pass for a spectacular hike in the Julian Alps with a historian. This afternoon, we sit down to a farmhouse lunch in the alpine before a walk through the Soča Valley.
Our journey continues with sublime biking through the Goriška Brda wine region. Crisscrossing the border of Italy, we make stops along the way to sample the local varietals and soak up the incredible views.
Visit the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves with a local expert before heading to one of the oldest European stud farms to learn about the fabulous Lipizzaner horses and for a picnic.
We take a short drive to the town of Vodnjan for a visit with one of the area's best olive oil producers. Then, we hop on our bikes for a tour of the Istrian Peninsula through farmer’s fields and forest groves.
After a relaxed breakfast, we depart for Pula Airport. If you have time before your flight, you can visit the nearby Roman Amphitheatre, which is one of the best-preserved in the world!

The views from the ride were spectacular, the sunsets unforgettable, and the Adriatic Sea swimming was the perfect restorative activity each day. The beautiful meals and hospitality of the local crew were also wonderful.—Emily Murray
