We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”
Traverse limestone cliffs along cobalt coastline
With small villages that bear mysterious pasts, verdant rolling hills dotted with grazing sheep, and trails that travel along limestone bluffs that drop off into the sparkling blue sea, we’ve deemed that travelling by foot may well be the best way to discover Sardina’s hidden pockets. Once the home of kidnappers and bandits, today its residents couldn’t be any more welcoming, as we’ll see on our journey that narrows in on two regions of the vast island. We begin in the Costa Smeralda, one of Europe’s most glamorous destinations with accommodation to match, before heading to the ancient and fertile Lanaitto Valley. Along the way, superb hikes and culturally-immersive experiences will render the experience all the richer.

Day by Day
We meet on the Costa Smeralda for a warm-up walk that loops around a beautiful outcropping of the coast with fabulous views of the azure waters. Enjoy a beachfront lunch and time for a dip before heading to our hotel for an aperitivo overlooking the La Maddalena archipelago.
This morning we’ll walk to San Pantaleo, known as an artists’ village with its collection of galleries, boutiques, cafes and a low-key vibe. From here, we’ll hike through an oak forest and onward to the unique granite mountains that loom over San Pantaleo.
Depart the Costa Smeralda for the Barbagia region, with its impressive Supramonte limestone massif. We’ll stop in the village Mamoiada for a visit to the Museo delle Maschere (Carnival Mask Museum) and a wine tasting and lunch at the Cantina Sedilesu winery.
Today we take on the Selvaggio Blu trail, Italy’s toughest trek, that runs along a stretch of panoramic cliffs. Our destination is the heavenly, crescent-shaped Cala Luna beach, where a private zodiac boat piloted by an expert skipper will take us for a scenic ride along the coast.
Trek the Lanaitto Valley, a fertile gorge tucked in the limestone cliffs that conceals a Nuragic (Bronze Age) village. We’ll enjoy a hearty, shepherd-inspired lunch in the mountains consisting of local meat, cheese, vegetables and wine.
Following breakfast, we’ll drive you to Olbia airport for your onward travels. Arrivederci!
Welcome to the Costa Smeralda.
