We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.

A Luxury Self-Drive Experience
Filled with interesting sights of its own, Munich serves perfectly as
both bookends to a journey through the wonderful land and cityscapes within
a short radius of its confines. This itinerary showcases the best to the south
and east of the Bavarian capital: the imposing castles and pretty lakes of
Füssen; the towering peaks of Austria’s Tyrol region; the stylish ski meccas of
Innsbruck and Kitzbühel; and the joyous history of Salzburg’s musical legacy.
And with both autobahns and switchbacks along the path, what better way to
complete the loop than at the wheel of a fine performance automobile? It’s the
perfect opportunity for you and your new BMW to get to know each other.

Day by Day
Depart towards Füssen at the foothills of the Bavarian Alps in your newly purchased BMW; if the timing is right, pause for a hearty lunch of pretzel and beer along the shores of the Ammersee or Starnbergersee lakes. Your hotel sits right on the shore of yet another picturesque lake, the Forggensee.
This morning choose among a few alternatives. Consider a spa treatment or, if grand castles are your thing, you can double back to explore another of Ludwig’s architectural creations, Hohenschwangau. Take lunch in the locale of your choice, perhaps in the well-known German ski base of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Spend the morning exploring the shops of Innsbruck before pointing your BMW east, to Kufstein. This humble sub-Alpine community is the home of esteemed wineglass producer Riedel, who will welcome you at headquarters for a private “glass tasting” of their fine crystal. From Riedel, it is a short drive up the gorgeous Brixental valley to tonight’s home, world-famous ski resort Kitzbühel.
Options abound today. In Kitzbühel, ride the cable-car to the top of the Horn massif, where you can enjoy a walk, or drive into the Obersalzberg region back in Bavaria, an area of stunning low-mountain landscapes and some history in the form of Hitler’s infamous Kehlsteinhaus retreat, better known as the “Eagle’s Nest.” At days end roll into Salzburg, City of Music.
Today, spend the morning discovering more of Salzburg on your own, or head up the autobahn to Munich to drop off your automobile for shipment. If timing permits, lunch on the pretty Chiemsee Lake is recommended en route back to the Bavarian capital.
Get to know your BMW in Eastern Europe’s jewel.
Schloss Elmau, Krun

Hotel Tennerhof, Kitzbuhel
The Tennerhof, a Relais & Châteaux property, radiates a special historic charm. Dating from 1679, the original building was a farmhouse which, due to its prominent location above Kitzbühel, had the informal responsibility of being the town’s weather lookout. The Von Pasquali family, who bought it in 1923, converted it little by little into the uniquely romantic hotel it has become. View hotel website »
Hotel Sacher, Salzburg
An Austrian institution in the heart of Salzburg, the Sacher is a perfect blend of old world charm and modern comforts, overlooking the Salzach River mere steps from the Old Town. A family run business, the Sacher’s dedication to outstanding service and excellence is legendary. As is its signature torte. View hotel website »
We never wanted to be the biggest travel company in the world, just the best.
— George Butterfield
I don’t know how B&R does it – the quality of their trips is so consistently high! Just when we think they couldn’t do anything as good as our last trip, they do! Another fantastic experience with B&R.Carolyn Zaslaw
