New Zealand With the Kids Age 12+ Activity Level: M
Start / Finish: Christchurch / Queenstown
Frodo is Just the Beginning
“So, where’s Old Zealand?” Good question (answer: Holland). With that out of the way, let’s focus on the New: an all-natural wonderland of mammoth glaciers, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls, lakes, rain forests, parrots (and sheep… lots of sheep). Movement is key to this trip; a cavalcade of bikes, 4x4 jeeps and jet boats get the whole family from one incredible adventure to the next (often, getting there is the adventure). And when we finally come to rest, we do it right: fine wine, a catered dinner at an observatory open just for us and a hearty dose of summer when you need it most—in the middle of winter. Phew!

Day 1 Get familiar with the landscape via an easygoing bike ride through pastoral farm country and the seaside surfing town of Taylor’s Mistake
Day 2 Take a guided historical walk through Christchurch before checking out the Antarctic Centre’s penguins and seals
Day 3 Join our local guide in a sheep-herding demonstration
Day 4 Check out the Southern Cross and the Big Dipper—upside down—via the MOATelescope, NZ’s largest
Day 5 Take a boat ride to the terminal moraine of a glacier and lunch at a mountaineer’s café
Day 6 Drink in the stunning views of Wanaka from our lakefront lodge
Day 7 Test your mind at the illusory Puzzling World and your mettle at Base Camp, an Everest-prep facility
Day 8 Get your adrenaline fix with a day of luging, abseiling, bungee-jumping and other death-defying amusements
Day 9 Breakfast and ka kite in Queenstown
