We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”

Day by Day
Warm up your cycling legs along the trails below Table Mountain overlooking the city. Then, sit in on a master class in mountain biking techniques for some tips and tricks that may come in handy later in the week.
Depart for the Overberg and Whale Coast, taking in spectacular views of the Cape along the way. Today's ride passes through apple orchards and a traditional organic wine farm (they still use a horse to pull the plough!), where we'll stop for an intimate tasting.
Choose between flat biking the sand dunes of the Walker Bay Reserve or mountain biking Fynbos Trail on hotel Grootbos’ own expansive private reserve. This afternoon, immerse yourself in the unique surrounding with one of the hotel's many activities.
Ride to the coastal town of Hermanus along the gorgeous Urban Trail, wedged between rugged mountain chain and the Indian Ocean. If we're lucky, we may even spot some whales along the way.
Set forth to Hemel en Aarde Valley, one of the most beautiful (yet somehow least-known), wine regions in South Africa. Lunch is served by the talented Chef Warwick Taylor, who bases his menus around seasonal ingredients grown by local farmers.
Joining the Babylonstoren gardeners on their morning harvest for the restaurants. Then, explore historic Stellenbosh and the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve by mountain bike, surrounded by towering mountains and staggeringly beautiful trails filled with waterfalls, wildlife and mountain fynbos.
This morning, we’ll arrange rides to Cape Town International Airport for either your international flight home or on- ward travels in the region.
Cape Grace, Cape Town
Situated on its own private and serence quay, the newly refurbished Cape Grace offers luxury accommodation located at the iconic Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Its dramatic backdrop is Table Mountain, and each room is designed using unique and refreshing décor from local artisans. After a day of exploring Cape Town, Cape Grace offers the perfect spot to relax and unwind. View hotel website »
Grootbos Forest Lodge, Grootbos Nature Reserve
Situated on the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in the Gansbaai area, this award-winning reserve is home to the largest Milkwood Forests in the world. The lodge is set within the fynbos and forest-clad hills, which overlook the whale-watching haven of Walker Bay. View hotel website »
This 250-hectare working farm is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in the Western Cape, surrounded by the dramatic Simonsberg and Franschhoek Mountains. Dating back to 1690, the original farm structures are beautifully preserved, reflecting the simplified Cape Dutch architecture of the era, with white washed walls and thick thatched roofs. With its rolling farmland, coastal vistas, and soaring mountains, South Africa’s Western Cape is choice cycling country. On this loop from Cape Town through wine country you’ll pedal some 20 miles a day, stopping to sample the region’s much-lauded Semillon and Pinotage.
We have taken many B&R trips, and this was one of the best. All hotels, food, scenery and experiences were first-rate, but what pushed the trip to the top of the list were our amazing guides who were there to anticipate our every need.— Virginia Gerst
