Piemonte and Portofino Tours
Glory Either Side of the Apennines
With towns like Barolo and Barbaresco—not to mention its famous truffles—it’s easy to understand why Piemonte is a gourmand’s paradise. And, as with most places whose livelihood is so closely tied to the land, the people here are down-to-earth (pardon the pun), and the countryside as beautiful as it is bountiful. Across the mountains to the south lies the majestic Ligurian coast, whose crown jewel is Portofino, seaside home to glitterati and the yachting crowd. Together they provide an ideal combination of earthly goodness and unearthly glamour that in many ways encapsulates Italy.

We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”

Day by Day
Head into the hills of the Barolo Langhe to begin our first walk along trails and through vineyards into Monforte d’Alba, Novello and Barolo. Later take part in a hands-on cooking lesson before enjoying our own delicious creations in the villa’s dining room.
Walk down to the lively town of Canale and up through peaceful vineyards to the perched town of Cisterna d’Asti. After seeing how nougat-makers and tailors created their hand-made art, head to lunch and possibly the best tajarin pasta you have ever tasted.
Drive to Alta Langa to meet up with our friend and trifulao (truffle hunter) Beppe and his trusty dog Diana to search for the famous local truffle. Tonight, join our local expert to learn about the Nebbiolo grape varietal (and taste it, of course!).
Today we head to the sea! Walk among villas to the historic fishing village of Camoglia to try their delicious focaccia, then cross the beautiful Monte di Portofino park to our amazing digs. Later, stroll down to Portofino’s picturesque harbor for a bit of history and who’s-who over cocktails before exploring the town’s many dinner options on your own.
Enjoy a boat cruise out of the azure Bay of Dolphins to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso. After a quick visit, traverse back home on pine-shaded trails through Portofino Regional Park. Tonight, celebrate our walking exploration with a farewell aperitivo on the hotel terrace, followed by a candle lit dinner of local specialties.
After breakfast together, we will drop you off at the train station in Rapallo, from which trains leave frequently both north and southbound. Private rides to the airport in nearby Genoa can be facilitated by your guides and the hotel, on request. Arrivederci!

Hotel Splendido, Portofino
Formerly a Benedictine monastery, the Hotel Splendido was converted into aluxurious hotel in 1922 and quickly became one of Europe’s hotspots. To this day, it is rated an one of the world’s best hideouts. As splendid as its name suggests, perched above Portofino’s yacht-filled harbour, its saltwater pool, exclusive spa, lovely rooms and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean will make you wish you could stay forever. Our walking is somewhat hilly with a few steep sections, and a few flat ones. For the most part, we stay on the dirt paths that run through the vineyards and forests, but we occasionally take quiet asphalt roads. There is also a section of gradual steps on the fourth day. The daily distances and long options range from 7.5 to 13 km (4.6 to 8 mi.) with good van support most days for when you’re ready to relax back at the hotel.
Walking Sticks &
Included with all walking trips are Leki telescoping walking sticks and custom-made padded hip holsters, which comfortably carry one full half-litre water bottle. And while the walking sticks get “recycled” for use by another B&R traveller, the holsters are yours to keep at trip’s end.
