Newfoundland Tours

The New Newfoundland

The draw for travellers has traditionally always been the wide expanses of raw nature, from ranging moose to towering icebergs—that and Newfoundlanders’ legendary sense of hospitality. Today though, the island is rapidly garnering a reputation for a keen arts scene as well as a meaningful approach to preserving a traditional way of life. The hiking has always been good, the people friendly and engaging, and the fish fresh; it’s just that now the whole experience has become so much more interactive. Stories of old told by those whose grandparents told them, traditional skills revived and put to use in contemporary settings, and a lively celebration encompassing all art forms from the stage to the paintbrush. Experience it all on this trip, one of our Newfoundland tours.

Our Places on the Verge trips are travel experiences with the goal of bringing interested travellers to up-and-coming destinations of the world. We get you in deep and up close, examining a region’s challenges, roots and myriad complexities.

Day by Day

We'll head northwest from St. John's this morning for the Bonavista Peninsula where we'll hike the coastal loop. Lunch today is at the Bonavista Social Club, boasting ocean views, organic ingredients and furnishings from the family wood shop next door.

This morning we'll be introduced to the heritage community that is the town of Trinity. From here it’s a short drive to New Bonaventure and the beginning of our first journey to sea! We’ll make our way to the island of Ireland’s Eye and continue on to British Harbour back on the mainland before hiking back to New Bonaventure.

Start the day with what Travel + Leisure magazine has named one of the top 35 hikes in Europe and North America, the Skerwink Trail. After lunch, take a private flight to Fogo Island where we’ll take part in a lively orientation to the island by Zita Cobb, one of the founders of the Shorefast Foundation and the innkeeper at the Fogo Island Inn.

Board the MV Ketanja for a tour of some of the outlying islands and abandoned settlements around Fogo Island. Later, we'll visit Little Fogo and take a short walk up to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, a beautifully kept heritage site. Dinner tonight is a traditional Fogo Island boil up on the beach, complete with local musicians and a shot or two of Screech!

Spend the first half of the day on an extended walk guided by Zita who will show you some of her favourite haunts on the island. Savour a late lunch at a small café in Joe Batts Arm before returning to the inn for an afternoon of relaxation and perhaps a tour of the local crafts at the neighbouring Winds and Waves Artisan’s Guild.

Before our late morning flight back to St John’s, we'll take a visit to the Great Auk, a 45-minute trek winding past local organic growers, stopping at the world-renowned Long Studio and paying homage to the now-extinct Great Auk, one of five bronze sculptures found here.
