We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”
A trip 50 years in the making
Many years ago – about 50 of them, in fact – the bicycling world of Butterfield & Robinson began in Starnberg, Germany. This is Bavaria—postcard perfect Germany—a land of sweeping mountains, sparkling lakes, timbered houses, lederhosen, felt hats, and strapping young men dancing and singing with young maidens, decked out in their dirndls and frilly Bavarian blouses.

Day by Day
Rendezvous in Munich and head south toward the Allgau plateau and the village of Endlhausen. Cycle through forests, fields and villages to Lake Tegern, where we board a private ferry and take in our Alpine surroundings from the water!
Cycle around Lake Tegern by bike, where we'll stop for lunch in one of the many waterfront restaurants. Freshly re-fueled, set out into the Kreuth Valley. Spend the afternoon getting pampered at the spa, enjoying a leisurely boat ride or participating in a cable car excursion to the top of the Wallberg.
Drive into the town of Kufstein this morning where we'll stop at the Riedel factory to witness hand blown glass masterpieces are created before our eyes. This afternoon, enjoy some lovely German scenery from the well-marked bike path that hugs the Inn River shoreline.
Set out this morning for a gorgeous ride around the stunning Chiemsee lake. Later, we’ll meet our local guide Sonia and board a private boat for a further peruse of the lake’s treasures—most notably, the grand island Herrenchiemsee Castle.
Today’s ride may have the most scenic starting point in the history of cycling journeys (seriously). Cycle past picture-perfect towns, winding roads, and ancient farms along the famously scenic landscape of Upper Bavaria.
This morning, we wake in Salzburg to a sumptuous breakfast, after which we say our farewells. We highly recommend spending another day or two exploring this great city on your own!
Founded in 1837 by Ferryman Josef Höß, this property is perfectly located on the lakeshore, with spacious rooms and a state of the art spa-complex, including various steam rooms, indoor and outdoor pools and saunas. Head of kitchen Christian Jurgens is the only chef in Bavaria to have 3 Michelin stars. View hotel website »
Residenz Heinz Winkler
Leaving Munich in 1991, Chef Heinz Winkler opened his elegant Relais & Chateaux property as a complement to his eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant within. With only nineteen beautifully appointed rooms, a gracious garden, and a topnotch spa, the hotel mirrors the gastronomic excellence for which he is acclaimed. View hotel website »
Hotel Sacher, Salzburg
An Austrian institution in the heart of Salzburg, the Sacher is a perfect blend of old world charm and modern comforts, overlooking the Salzach River mere steps from the Old Town. A family run business, the Sacher’s dedication to outstanding service and excellence is legendary. As is its signature torte. View hotel website »
Travelling with B&R is an over-the-top experience. It seems that every moment from biking in the breathtaking countryside to the luxury hotels, the food, the wine, the other travellers, and the excellent guides—all are the most memorable. The hardest part of the trip is the return to reality!— Betsy Sampliner
This trip has been wunderbar! Using a bicycle as transport is nothing short of genius. We’ve discovered the German countryside in the least touristy-way possible while fully immersing ourselves in the culture. And, key for me, it burns calories!I Can I Will I Do
We never wanted to be the biggest travel company in the world, just the best.
— George Butterfield
The riding varies, with a few hills here and there but also plenty of flat/downhill. Much of the riding for the week is on dedicated bike paths, which can make for occasional gaps in van support, but which also offer pleasant, traffic-free riding. *It is important to know that bike paths in German speaking Europe make no difference between asphalt and hard packed gravel. Experienced road bike riders should have no issues on these gravel stretches. For less experienced cyclists, hybrid bicycles are strongly recommended.
“I ride my bike once or twice a month and am comfortable on two wheels.”
Relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.Read more on our Activity Levels
