Danube Bike Tour
From Vienna to Budapest
Before it dissolved after World War I, the Austro-Hungarian Empire represented a golden age for both Hungarians and Austrians, the culmination of 300 years of learning how to live together, despite differences of language and culture. On this trip, we unite the empire once again—at least symbolically. The storied waterways of the Danube River provide a link between two fascinating, unique cultures, and two of Europe's most resplendent cities. Culminating with a night in Budapest at one of Europe’s most magnificent city palace hotels, this trip will leave you feeling anything but blue (pardon the pun).

We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”

Day by Day
Start your first ride in the village of Potzneusiedl. Cycle along the Leitha River through the villages of Gattendorf, Zurndorf and Weiden am See. Tonight, dinner will be at a restaurant included in the World's Top 100 list, a definite trip highlight!
Pedal inland through the villages surrounding Eisenstadt. Stop for lunch at a family-run Heuriger, a seasonal restaurant linked to a winery. This evening head into nearby Eisenstadt for a guided visit to its ornate Esterhazy Palace.
Ride back to the shores of Lake Neusiedl and the town of Rust for a private cruise. More flat riding on tree-lined roads awaits! We'll enjoy a casual lunch in the castle courtyard and then cycle across the border into Hungary and then Slovakia.
Take a loop ride around Chateaux Amade through tiny villages and farms. Enjoy a buffet lunch back at the hotel and either spend the afternoon on another ride or relaxing at the hotel, taking advantage of all the Chateau has to offer!
Ride from the riverside hamlet of Szob along a stretch of uninterrupted bike path hugging the Danube’s left bank. Enjoy a private cruise on the Danube into Budapest and our splendid hotel before venturing out into the city for a dinner finale.
After a breakfast worthy of the hotel’s grandeur, you will depart at your leisure to head home or explore more of this vibrant city!
Taubenkobel, Schuetzen am Gebirge
Famed most for its superb restaurant, the classy hotel side of Taubenkobel is often overlooked. Showing his versatility, it was Chef Walter Eselböck himself who stepped out of the kitchen to design the rooms, matching his culinary prowess with decorative excellence in the creation of this Relais & Chateaux property. Chateau Amade, Vrakun
Built as the summer retreat of the Amade family. After the family lost their infl uence, it got run down and then it was rebuilt by a Jewish businessman in the beginning of the 20th century. The building fortunately survived both world wars and served as a hospital and then as a school. It was given back into private hands 15 years ago, when the works started to turn it into a five star hotel. View hotel website »
Four Seasons Gresham Palace, Budapest
A bucket-list property if ever there was one, the Gresham Palace ranks among the most grandiose and awe-inspiring hotels in Europe. Recently named the #1 hotel in all Europe by T+L readers, it truly has to be seen to be appreciated. View hotel website »
Most of the riding on this trip is perfectly flat, although there is a very occasional short, gentle climb, particularly on the second day. The daily distances average 50 km (31 mi.). There are two layover days, which allow for some shorter routes and, for avid cyclists, longer options.
You can't enjoy a great biking trip without a really great bike. On this trip you'll be riding a customized hybrid or a racing bike with drop bars. We also equip you with handlebar bag, helmet and water bottle.
