China Luxury Travel

Superpower Superstar

Poised for superpowerdom, China’s time is now—blessed with a booming economy and bursting with more people than any other country on Earth, the favourite joke among the Chinese is that their national bird is the construction crane. In modern Beijing, you can join the world’s largest peloton—two million strong, plus Norman, our expert guide—and ride past hutongs, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. China’s time is also long, long ago: remote Naxi villages, a serene tea ceremony, tai chi in the park and champagne on a less-travelled stretch of the Great Wall will bring the past to the present. Later, ample time to reflect over extended stays at secluded and splendid hotels. Time waits for no one, but in China, it slows down for us.

Trip Details

We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.

These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.

“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”

“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”

“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”

“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”

“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”

The Peninsula, Shanghai

Synonymous with the centre of Shanghai, the “bund” is a Hindi word that means levee, or edge, and this is the edge of the mighty middle kingdom. Looking across to the Pudong region, the new skyscrapers, it provides the best view in town and the best place from which to explore this international city. View hotel website »

Activity Level

This itinerary includes a few of our best bike rides from the region, but these can be easily replaced with walks or cultural experiences. The rides are between 20 and 40 km in cities and over gentle rolling rural terrain. We bike as a group with Chinese and B&R guides escorting you, with the opportunity to stop along the way. The traffic can be unnerving at the beginning, but in this country of 1.3 billion people and seemingly as many bicycles, drivers are accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists. Rural areas such as Yangshuo and Lijiang offer far more wide open spaces and relatively few vehicles sharing the roads.

What's Included

  • Hotel accommodation as indicated
  • All breakfasts, most lunches and most dinners
  • All drinks with included meals (including beer, wine and cocktails with dinner, but excluding premium wine & spirits)
  • Services of a B&R local guide
  • All special events, tours, guest experts and entrance fees
  • All transportation from rendezvous to drop-off and all baggage transportation
  • Detailed maps, route suggestions, bikes and other equipment
  • All gratuities for baggage, porters and hotel service

At Your Service

We take pride in choosing guides who are not only exceptional travelling companions, but who’ll go far beyond the call of duty to ensure an unforgettable experience.

“Our guides were fantastic – informative, enjoyable, accommodating, fun and eager to show us an insider's view of China. We enjoyed lots of great Chinese food, local farmers’ markets, a tea plantation, Buddhist temples and stunning historic sites. We would highly recommend B&R!”

A Wrinkle in Time

I’m attempting time travel, no other way to put
it. I’m trying to drill backwards, into some historic experience of this incredible place. And for a moment, on my very first morning in China – in a lush green valley north of Lijiang, in rustic Yunnan province – I’m pretty sure I’ve succeeded.
