Spain Biking Tours
Getting Surreal in Spain
From your bike, you can see the peaks of the Pyrénées (a beautiful range of mountains) looming on the horizon. Volcanic flats stretch out ahead, leading to unbelievably pastoral fields. Along the way stand villages shaped by the hands of Roman architects, medieval craftsmen and surrealist artists. Dinner is tapas on a barbecue paired with a perfect vintage before settling in to a unique auberge or a palatial hotel. This is no dream. Welcome to Catalonia, where the unexpected happens every day.

We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.
These are stylish 4-star properties that offer a casual and comfortable stay. Often without a 24-hour concierge or room service, they tend to be smaller family-run hotels that are perfect for the region.
“I can’t say I really ‘work out,’ but I’m in good shape and am relatively active.”
“I enjoy a good walk or ride, and feel comfortable while on the move.”
“I get moving at least once a week, and don’t mind a little sweat.”
“I get moving a few times per week and enjoy some exertion.”
“I want to feel invigorated each day and going hard is how I like to do that.”

Day by Day
Ride through the heart of Garrotxa Natural Park, an ever-changing landscape of dormant volcanoes and rich soils that extends from the foothills of the Pyrénées. Pedal from the medieval village of Santa Pau to Banyoles for a lunch of seasonal ingredients on the main square.
Ride through the Alt Empordà, nestled between the Pyrénées and the Mediterranean with France above. Stop for a café con leche at the social club in the village of San Llorenç before heading for lunch in the quaint village of Terrades. Enjoy cocktails this evening with our Dali Expert and realize just how interesting the life of this surrealist painter was.
Enter the largest surrealist “object” in the world, the Teatro-Museo de Salvador Dali. Bike south to the Baix Emporda, stopping en route for a picnic in the vineyards of wine maker, Antoni. Of course you’ll have a chance to ask him personally about his wines as you taste them with lunch!
Ride through quiet countryside and enchanting villages, including Pals, Peratallada, Monells, and Ullastret. Have lunch on your own (and perhaps a swim!) at the seaside village of Calella. Keen riders can challenge themselves with a Century challenging long option passing lovely seaside villages before reaching Calella.
Enjoy a stunning ride from the seaside town Tossa de Mar along the Med shore, with breathtaking views around every corner. Roll into Sant Feliu de Guixolls, and board our private sail boat for a cruise up the panoramic coast. Be serenaded by local Habaneras musicians over cocktails.
Enjoy a final scrumptious breakfast together at the hotel in and adéu in Barcelona.
Mas Falgarona, Avinyonet de Puigvent
This quiet and serene hotel is located just outside of charming Figueres. Built in the 15thC, it is now a stylish, contemporary hotel with all modern amenities, yet it still retains its country charm thanks to the surrounding farmland. Mas Falgarona has been a labour of love for centuries with walls dating from the 15th, 17th and 21st century, the latter which transformed it to the hotel it is today. It is owned currently by a local family from Dali’s home town of Figueres. View hotel website »
La Plaça, Madremanya
This attractive 11-room property with a large private garden sits in the magical village of Madremanya, one of the most admired yet less trafficked of the Empordá region. The hotel restaurant is loved for it's menu of fresh, market ingredients. View hotel website »
La Malcontenta, Palamos
Translated to ‘The Unsatisfied One,’ this beautiful property was named after the mother of the owner whose perfectionism was a relentless force during the creation of the hotel. Its spacious environment extends outdoors to a great garden and pool, complementing a classic Mediterranean décor. The sea is a mere 15 minute walk away ending up at one of the most tranquil beaches along the Costa Brava. View hotel website »
The riding is varied with the majority of terrain being rolling hills and flat stretches on quiet country roads. There will be a couple of challenging climbs that just require your patience and time. At your own personal pace, they can be conquered and perhaps even enjoyed, as they bring us to more amazing vistas! In order to avoid some of the busier roads, our routes sometimes include unpaved gravel and dirt roads. The days’ distances range from 25 to 52 km (15.5 to 33 mi.), with options for more every day.

“This trip was outstanding - maybe the best European B&R trip I have ever taken! The food blew me away in that it was consistently good everywhere we went, and the wine was jaw dropping. I do not know why it has taken me so long to get to Spain, but shame on me! B&R has opened the door to a new country for me - and I will be back!”
