An Oenological Extravaganza
For a wine lover, it could be said that there are three Edens: Bordeaux, home to the great full blends of Châteaux Petrus, Figeac, and Lafite-Rothschild; Burgundy, home of the chardonnay by which all others are compared, and tamer of that most delicate and tricky of grapes, pinot noir; and Piemonte, where Barbaresco and Barolo—“the king of wines”—reign. Experiencing all three over the course of one journey (seamlessly, with the aid of private jets) is nothing short of heavenly. On this trip, we offer up all of our secrets and employ all of our connections to bring you access to the most interesting growers, blenders, négotiants and sommeliers. We get our hands dirty in the vines, taste from the barrel, and drink prized vintages over Michelin-starred meals. Most of all, we enjoy some of our favourite pockets of Europe the way we always have—over the handlebars of our bikes, one pedal stroke at a time.
Day 1 Ride from Château de Margaux through the Médoc, culminating in a private wine tasting at Château Pichon Longueville-Baron and a two-star Michelin dinner
Day 2 Learn about the art of blending at Château Lynch-Bages before pedalling to a tasting at Château Lafite-Rothschild
Day 3 Cycle along the Gironde estuary, past fishing ports and vineyards, to the medieval town of St-Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Day 4 Ride into Pomerol past legendary names such as Cheval Blanc, Vieux Château Certan and Château Petrus, with a tasting at the celebrated Château Franc Mayne, a Premier Grand Cru Classé
Day 5 Take a private jet to Piemonte, arriving in time for lunch in Monforte d’Alba, a sublime ride through the Nebbiolo vineyards, and a vertical tasting at Rocche dei Manzoni estate
Day 6 Pedal through the famous Langhe hills, take part in a truffle hunt, and roll into an afternoon tasting of Barbaresco, at the legendary Gaja winery
Day 7 Between rides, enjoy a cooking demonstration, a picnic lunch, and a guided walking tour through historic Alba
Day 8 Jet north to Burgundy for lunch in Gevrey-Chambertin, followed by a ride past the who’s who of Grand Cru vineyards and a barrel tasting with noted oenologist Jean-Pierre Renard
Day 9 Pedal deep into the Côte de Beaune past Pommard, Meursault, and St-Romain, with time to explore the charming wine town of Beaune in the afternoon
Day 10 Bike to Montrachet for a taste of the great Chassagne chardonnay, followed by a vertical tasting of a Corton Grand Cru with Jean-Pierre Renard at the winemaking institute (and a finale that includes 3 Michelin stars and a prized bottle of Romanée-Conti)
Day 11 Breakfast in Beaune and au revoir in Dijon

Girard Françoise
Wine Grand Journey 2010
“One of the most memorable moments was George Butterfield sabering champagne bottles on the front steps of the hotel, as well as the tasting at winemaker Elio Altare, who received us so warmly in his home on a Sunday afternoon; the stunning views of vineyards and small hilltop castles while biking on the ridges in Piemonte; the cocktail at sunset in the medieval castle on top of the hill in Serralunga, and many other moments.”
Stan Lindenfeld
Wine Grand Journey 2010
"This was the most memorable trip I have taken in many years, perhaps ever. The experience was like living a dream!"

Moderate
Our average bike ride is 35 km, with the option one day to do a 100 km Century Ride. Our first two days in the Médoc let you warm up your legs, as the topography is flat or very gently rolling. St-Emilion is slightly hillier, though with extensive easygoing riding in places. Piemonte offers the most challenging terrain of the week, with some long gradual climbs. In Burgundy we return to flat and gently rolling routes, though hillier options are legion for those looking for a workout.
Important note: walks of 6 to 10 km are available on all but the first three days of the trip. The walking terrain varies from forest path to vineyard to quiet unpaved roads, and in general is of moderate difficulty.
