A New Twist on an old Classic
We’ve been pedaling through Provence for decades, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t still enjoy every well-trod trail and much-visited town. But on this trip, we’ve decided to stray outside the region’s most famous pockets to show you our favourite hidden gems. You’ll see authentic Provence as you experience daily life in towns like Forcalquier and Pierrerue. We’ll stay in a 17th century convent, and take you inside the labs at Occitane. We’ll show you the sky from a local observatory, and teach you about the red-hued houses of Roussillon on a private tour through the ochre mines. Best of all, you still experience the classics—with a twist.
Day 1 Pedal from the Lure Mountain to the headquarters of Occitane, where you get to blend your own Provençal fragrance
Day 2 Shop for picnic goodies among the market stalls of little-known Forcalquier, then bike into the Lubéron valley
Day 3 Build up your appetite for dinner on a Century Ride via Apt and the Calavon River
Day 4 Experience Peter Mayle’s Provence on two wheels, pedaling past the picture-postcard villages of Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes, and Lacoste
Day 5 Ride through the beautiful Vaucluse mountains, where you enjoy stunning views and a royal picnic
Day 6 Breakfast in Gargas, then au revoir in Avignon

Le Couvent des Minimes, Mane en Provence
This early 17th century convent had its path marked early on as
it specialized in the culture and study of plants and essences. Louis XIV’s botanist wrote two important treatises within its
walls and when the bishop of the nearby town of Forcalquier took it over, he used its unique location at the foot of the Alpes, to transform it into a fl ourishing garden providing fruits and crops for the region. No surprise that the famous cosmetic and fragrance brand Occitane decided to further transform the structure into a gem of a hotel combining it with a spa in harmony with its unique provencal character and history.

La Coquillade, Gargas
This elegant country residence is a brand new Relais & Châteaux property located in the heart of the Luberon. Although some of the walls date back as far as the 11th century, the restructured hamlet is pure luxury with its air conditioned floors, Leitner linens and exquisite Pierre Frey oak furniture. The unique setting is perched on a hilltop and surrounded by 22 hectares of the Aureto Vineyards, home to the estate’s gold medal winning wine. From the large sun-cell heated pool outside you can spy every little Luberon village.

David & Linda Scott
Provence Biking 2010
“I would tell a prospective traveller: 'B&R's itinerary immerses you into the local culture from the moment you first get on your bike. You see and experience things differently and more intimately on a bike than from a car or as part of a formalized tour group; like a grape vine, you sense the terroir of the place. Our most memorable B&R moment? Meeting and riding with 'Team Samba' from Sao Paolo; a self-guided tour of Rousillon; the picnic in Parc Naturel with a live band; the accommodations, especially Bastide de Marie; and finally, and probably most importantly, how hard Annick worked to make sure we had a great time!”

Provence Biking 2010
“There are so many things I would like to say about the trip. First and foremost, Thilo was amazing in just about every way! The design, plan and execution of the trip were flawless. The trip to the observatory and perfumer were things we would not have had a chance to experience in our normal lives! La Coquillade was one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever been to. Annik was also an excellent guide. She was a pleasure to talk to and very helpful in answering so many of our questions. This was our fourth B&R trip and it was magnificent. Provence was the most beautiful landscape yet! We are busy planning next year’s trip as we are always so pleased with the quality of the guides, the food and wine, the activities and of course the cycling. Thank you once again B&R!”

Moderate
This trip is rated Moderate. Most of the riding is quite manageable, becoming slightly more challenging around the Vaucluse area and our final hotel. However, where the hills are challenging—up to Massif des Cèdres, for example—the B&R van is there to help out weary riders. Daily distances average 50 km (31 mi.), with the option for a 102 km (63 mi.) Century Ride on one day.
