Bohemian Chic
History class need not end when summer vacation starts. Dynamic Prague has seen medieval kings, the Holy Roman Empire and the Iron Curtain rise and fall. Vienna, not to be outdone, has outlasted Crusades, the Habsburgs and a pair of world wars. Out here, we cycle along the banks of sparkling rivers, sun-dappled forests and through medieval fortress towns. The learning in between is anything but dry; your kids explore dungeons, raft a Bohemian river, make their own strudel and study the physics of waterslides while you dine at the region’s top tables, marvel at monasteries and learn the finer points of local vintages. It’s straight A’s all around.
Day 1 Absorb all you can in a private, expat-guided tour of the fortress town of Ceský Krumlov
Day 2 Kids raft down the Vltava River while the adults enjoy an afternoon on their own
Day 3 Adults dine at the legendary Landhaus Bacher restaurant while the kids make strudel and enjoy a pizza dinner
Day 4 While the kids rock-climb, wander the hallowed halls of the baroque Melk monastery before a tasting at a nearby wine cellar
Day 5 After a morning bike together, kids visit Vienna's Prater Park, then everyone reunites for an historical walk and final night in the capital
Day 6 Breakfast and bis speda in Vienna

Hotel Ruže, Ceský Krumlov
The Hotel Ruže is the best hotel in Ceský Krumlov. Constructed as a 16thC Jesuit Monastery in the Renaissance style, it is now a comfortable (though not luxury) hotel with a beautiful view of the village, the river and surrounding hills. Enjoy this vista from the restaurant terrace as you reward unwind from the day’s activities.

Hotel Sacher Wien, Vienna
Established in 1876 in the centre of the city, there is simply no questioning that the five-star Hotel Sacher is Vienna’s most highly regarded hotel. Blended traditional décor and all the modern amenities, its location across from the Opera House, the Kärntner Straße, and a mere five-minute walk from the Hofburg Imperial Palace is a welcome convenience, but it’s this Leading Hotels of the World’s famed eponymous chocolate dessert that may leave the most enduring impression.

Hotel Richard Löwenherz, Dürnstein
Founded on the site of a 700-year-old Clarissinian Abbey, the Richard Löwenherz is now a hotel with richly historical interiors filled with antiques, Renaissance sculpture, elegant chandeliers and stone vaulting. We are well looked after by Frau Theiry and her staff, who quickly make us feel at home whether we’re lounging in the living room with an after-dinner schnapps, lazing in the rose garden by the pool, or enjoying a sunny breakfast on the arbour-covered terrace overlooking the Danube.

Easygoing to Moderate
This trip is rated Easygoing to Moderate. The riding in the Czech Republic and Austria offers much variety in landscape. In southern Bohemia around Ceský Krumlov, the hills are more challenging. The bike paths along the Danube are virtually flat and hassle free. Options are available.
