By Bike
New Zealand Biking Activity Level: M
Start / Finish: Christchurch / Queenstown
Even Better in Person
Huge, yet compact. Imposing, yet friendly. Wide open, yet intimate. The dichotomies of New Zealand take some time to process (usually an hour; after that, you stop trying). Beauty is served raw down here. You see it carved in the face of mighty Mount Cook and the coastlines of the remarkable Tasman Sea, shimmering in the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo, in the leafy shade of the prehistoric rain forests and spread throughout the quaint towns and sheep-sprinkled farmlands that line the South Island’s bike routes. It’s just as impressive indoors, too: luscious salmon, distinctive Sauvignon Blanc and stunning views of the Southern Alps from our hotel for two wonderful evenings, Terrace Downs. Splendid, yet splendiferous.

Day 1 Get familiar with the landscape via an easygoing bike ride through pastoral farm country and the seaside surfing town of Taylor’s Mistake
Day 2 Whisk down the Rakaia Gorge in one of New Zealand’s finest inventions: the jet boat
Day 3 Ride out to Lake Tekapo, a small community nestled between the lake and the peaks of New Zealand's Southern Alps
Day 4 Take a boat ride to the terminal moraine of a glacier and lunch at a mountaineer’s café
Day 5 Drink in the stunning views of Wanaka from our lakefront lodge
Day 6 Bike out to an old gold-mining town before visiting Queenstown, the Adventure Capital of the World
Day 7 Get your adrenaline fix with a day of luging, abseiling, bungee-jumping and other death-defying amusements
Day 8 Breakfast and ka kite in Queenstown
