Biking in a Storybook
Visiting the Loire Valley with your kids is akin to taking them on vacation in a fairy tale. The backyard of princes and princesses since the Middle Ages, you’ll love the “garden of France” for its verdant forests, impenetrable solitude and centuries-old elegance that has only grown stronger with time. The kids will love it for the canoeing, the swordplay, which will make you feel like Zorro or d'Artagnan, (supervised and totally safe, we promise!) and the sprawling fields of sunflowers fit for a romp. You’ll all love it for the great food, fantastic biking, the luxury château, and how we let all ages enjoy it on their own terms with time together and apart. Everybody wins!
Day 1 Bike to the château and gardens of Villandry via a goat cheese farm—then kids try their hand at fencing where a fully qualified fencing master imparts the knowledge he shared with the National Teams of Israel, Great Britain and Holland
Day 2 Bike to lovely Azay-le-Rideau for lunch, then kids canoe down the Indre River while parents keep riding
Day 3 Pedal to one of the most beautiful villages in France before kids head off on a horseback riding adventure
Day 4 Cross the Vienne River en route to the Château du Rivau—a favourite haunt of Joan of Arc
Day 5 Follow in the footsteps of Richard the Lionheart on our visit to the Royal Abbey of Fontévraud; later, kids take to a ropes course and everyone enjoys a Michelin-starred dinner
Day 6 Breakfast in Chinon, then au revoir in St-Pierre-des-Corps

Château de Brou, Noyant-de-Touraine
We not only feel welcomed at the intimate Château de Brou, but very special when we’re there--especially since this immaculately restored 15thC castle seems straight out of a fairy tale. The château offers views over a private park and the Vallée de Courtineau.

Château de Marçay, Chinon
When the château was built in the 15th century, its white tufa limestone was quarried from below the site. The long ramp that once allowed stone to be brought out of the ground now provides access to the wine cellars below.

Manoir de Restigné, Bourgueil
Outside the facade tells you 17th century, inside more 18th century. One thing is for sure this small residence is a great addition to the royal landscape of the Loire, yet still distinctly different. Its location, 5 km (3 mi.) from Bourgueil, allows us to partake in yet another legendary town while indulging in regal luxury. The lovingly restored and renovated buildings are worth a tour in themselves.

Loire Valley With the Kids 2010
"This truly felt like a once in a lifetime experience. The most memorable moment involved surprising our in-laws with a French song sung by their grandchildren on their anniversary—it was incredible."
Judith Billings
Loire Valley With the Kids 2010
“The guides Karen and Michael were great and were very good with the kids (and the adults). We were travelling with our granddaughter for a special trip, and the guides made it extremely pleasant for all.”
Isabella Gukeisen
Loire Valley With the Kids 2010
“The trip was perfect! The hotels were luxurious, and our guides were so much fun to be around! They told stories of their trips, and lots of jokes and always cheered me up whenever I felt down. Our guides were Tom McCarthy and Alice Voort. They showed us great places in the Loire Valley and I can’t wait to book another B&R trip!”

Easygoing to Moderate
This trip is rated Easygoing to Moderate. While most of the riding is on gently rolling terrain, there are occasional hills in and out of the river valleys. The average daily riding distance is 47 km (29 mi.) for adults, with longer and shorter options. Parents may opt to join in on alternative afternoon activities, thus shortening daily rides. The activities on this trip are geared for children 5 years old and up; the younger children may need to use a trailer or child tandem. Most events are appropriate for all ages; where safety considerations exclude smaller children, alternatives will be offered.
