Where the Wild Things Are
In Africa, five is a really big number. We’d be remiss if we sent you home from Africa without giving you the chance to check elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinoceros—the big-game Big Five—off your list of all-time must-sees. On our post-trip to the Eastern Cape’s Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, you’ll plenty of time to track down the beasties (as well as giraffes, zebras and kudu) on daily bush walks with experienced travellers and game drives in 4x4 safari vehicles. Best of all, we sleep where the animals do (not literally, of course) at the reserve’s Relais & Châteaux-approved lodge.
The Kwandwe Post-Trip is an add-on to our South Africa Biking trip. Read more about this trip here.
Day 1 Stroll through the bush with an expert guide in search of the fabled Big Five (pack extra film)
Day 2 Hop into a 4x4 and get out deep into the wild after dark, when the nocturnal animals come out to play
Day 3 Walk in the footprints of the first humans at the Valley of the Ancient Voices, a prehistoric rock-art site, with historian Alan Weyer leading the way
Day 4 Breakfast at Kwandwe, then vaarwel in Port Elizabeth

Kwandwe Private Game Lodge, Grahamstown
We are always on the lookout for excellent hotels, and we certainly struck gold when we discovered the dreamy Kwandwe Private Game Lodge. This exquisite riverside property consists of nine thatched-roof, timber and glass chalets filled with antiques and decorated in stunning earth tones.

Easygoing
This trip is rated Easygoing. For our Kwandwe reserve post-trip, our bush walks focus on observing nature and wildlife. We will also have a walking tour of a prehistoric rock age site. None of the walks are long or challenging: they are more strolls than hikes.
