Getting Surreal in Spain
From your bike, you can see the peaks of the Pyrénées looming on the horizon. Volcanic flats stretch out ahead, leading to unbelievably pastoral fields. Along the way stand villages shaped by the hands of Roman architects, medieval craftsmen and surrealist artists. The local dialect and traces of the thriving culture—a dizzying mix of French and Spanish—poke through everywhere after years of dictatorial oppression. Dinner is tapas or a barbecue paired with a perfect vintage before settling in to a unique auberge or a palatial hotel. A mustachioed Spaniard makes clocks melt. This is no dream. It just feels like one. Welcome to Catalonia, where the unexpected happens every day.
Day 1 Cycle from Meranges through the Cerdanya Valley to a garden dinner of Catalan barbecue
Day 2 Cross the border into France for a café au lait before cruising downhill through Puigcerdà, a typical Pyrénées town
Day 3 Make the awe-inspiring descent from towering La Molina to the cozy village of Castellar de n’Hug before continuing on to our country-style farmhouse hotel, Mas Falgarona
Day 4 Tour the Dalí Theatre and Museum with a local expert
Day 5 Bike through the quaint villages of the Baix Empordà
Day 6 Breakfast in Torrent and adéu in Barcelona

Torre del Remei, Bolvir
Sometimes our trip planners have to scour a region to find the best hotels. Other times the answer is very obvious; Torre del Remei in Catalonia is one such place. Built in 1910 as a gift for the daughter of a wealthy Catalan family, this Relais & Châteaux hotel has spacious rooms with private terraces, beautiful gardens, an outdoor pool, a gym, and a very charming owner, Señor Boix, who understands B&R to a tee and makes us feel right at home. If only it were always this easy.

Mas Falgarona, Avinyonet de Puigventós
This serene hotel is located just outside of Figueres. Built in the 15th century, it is now a stylish, contemporary hotel with all modern amenities, yet it still retains its country charm thanks to the surrounding farmland. Mas Falgarona is a labour of love of owners Severino and Brigitta, and much of the hotel’s photography is the work of their son.

Hotel Mas de Torrent, Torrent
Hotel Mas de Torrent, located in the heart of Empordà, is one of Catalonia’s most beautiful hotels, and a very welcome sight at the end of a long day on the trail. It was once an old Catalan masia, a typical farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. Fully restored and the pride of the locals, it now boasts a swimming pool, tennis courts and massage service.

Catalonia Biking 2010
“Travelling with B&R is an over-the-top experience. It seems that every moment from biking in the breathtaking countryside to the luxury hotels, the food, the wine, the other travellers, and the excellent guides—all are the most memorable. The hardest part of the trip is the return to reality!”

Moderate
This trip is rated Moderate. The riding is varied with the majority of terrain being rolling hills and flat stretches on quiet country roads. There will be a couple of challenging climbs that just require your patience and time. At your own personal pace, they can be conquered and perhaps even enjoyed, as they bring us to more amazing vistas! In order to avoid some of the busier roads, our routes sometimes include unpaved gravel and dirt roads. The days’ distances range from 30 to 50 km (19 to 31 mi.), with options for more every day.
