Vintage Butterfield
Burgundy’s charms are irresistible; we’ve been smitten with the place since our very first visit decades ago. There’s no place we know better—in fact, we’ve been here so long we’re considered locals and our friends are more like family. But the legendary Côte de Nuits reds and Montrachet whites are only the beginning. Come along as we stroll through celebrated vineyards and ageless towns like Oingt, easily one of the most beautiful villages in France (no mean feat, that). And at the end of each day, the comfortable confines of the region’s top properties and a trio of Michelin-starred dinners await. Whoever said “You can’t go home again” clearly didn’t live here.
Day 1 Receive an informal introduction to Burgundian wines with a professional in the wine cellar of our hotel, Château André Ziltener
Day 2 Walk along the Cotes de Beaune to lunch at a château in Savigny les Beaune, home of some of the best premier cru wines in Burgundy
Day 3 Tour medieval Beaune with our local guide
Day 4 Walk through the lush landscape of the Ouche Valley, the greenest part of Burgundy and dine on superb Michelin-starred creations in a 12thC Cistercian abbey, our home for the next two nights.
Day 5 Walk a gorgeous stretch of the Canal de Bourgogne to lunch at a private garden, followed by leisurely stops at quintessentially French villages
Day 6 Breakfast in Bussière and au revoir in Dijon

Château André Ziltener, Chambolle-Musigny
Set amid the vines in tiny Chambolle-Musigny, the intimate yet luxurious 18thC Château André Ziltener opened as a hotel in 1993. Tastefully decorated and surrounded by a peaceful garden, the hotel has only 10 rooms--meaning that the service is excellent and we usually have the place all to ourselves.

Hôtel Le Cep, Beaune
A collection of noble townhouses dating from the Middle Ages, Hôtel Le Cep is ideally located within steps of the shops and restaurants in the historic centre of Beaune. The courtyard is a great spot to unwind over a glass of wine, and the tower staircase leads to an incredible view over the city’s medieval rooftops. Le Cep also has earned the distinction of being the hotel with which B&R has worked the longest.

Abbaye de la Bussière, La Bussière-sur-Ouche
Purchased by the Cummings family in 2005, this “new” boutique hotel is in fact a medieval castle that was once a Cistercian monastery and later a hunting lodge. Now the country-house hotel offers luxurious accommodations within an 18-acre park. The château was entirely refurbished prior to its opening, and joined Relais & Châteaux in 2007--the same year Olivier Elzer, the young talented chef of the property’s restaurant, earned his first Michelin star.

Easygoing to Moderate
This trip is rated Easygoing to Moderate. For the most part, we walk on gently rolling terrain, although we tackle the occasional steep climb or descent. As the terrain can be rocky, footwear with good ankle support is essential. On average, we walk 10-13 km (6-8 mi.) daily, with longer options available on some days.
