Stellar Guides: Leading the Way in Morocco

Biking in MoroccoB&R has always taken particular pride in knowing the lay of the land wherever we travel. What we value most is local knowledge—that resident understanding of the region through those who can give us a more authentic taste for the area—whether that means alternative routes off the beaten track, the unsung five-star restaurants that only locals frequent, or the many other community connections that can enrich the entire experience. And that begins with knowing the truly talented guides.

Our 2010 Morocco Biking trip features a new and totally revamped itinerary and exceptional guides who take us deeper into this fascinating land as never before. While we’ve been travelling in Morocco for 16 years, we’re very excited about the prospects of where our explorations will lead us now, and we’re sure those who fell for this country the first time will have even more reason to plan a return visit.

AbdessamaneAlong the way we team up with a succession of guides who reveal the mysteries of this extraordinary land in their own inimitable way. We begin with Abdessamane, our guide for our first three days, who hails from the town of Skoura, where we’re based. As a Berber he has connections throughout the region and has a natural ease with detailing the finer points of local history from both the formal perspective and the more intriguing personal point of view.

As we head to the mountains we are joined during our first evening by Wafa, a Muslim-educated woman from Marrakech who offers views of life in Morocco from quite a different standpoint. Wafa’s willingness to be very open with answering questions from travellers, and portraying life as a Muslim woman is not just revealing, but rare in these circumstances. We’re very fortunate to arrange her services.

The following day, we are in the capable hands of local Berber mountain guides who lead us on a hike through a number of villages in the Atlas Mountains. Surefooted in every respect—and naturally informative—they offer excellent insights into this remote land.

Biking in MoroccoUpon arriving in Marrakech, we are treated to one of the city’s best-loved guides, Mohammed Bouskri, a man who has hosted many of our Regional Directors while being the go-to guide for stars and dignitaries such as Ronald Reagan, Will Smith, Brad Pitt and numerous others. He is commonly known as “Mr. Marrakech” and as B&R has been working with him since first arriving in Morocco in 1993, we enjoy a special relationship with him. This is just the sort of access that we feel continues to distinguish B&R trips and guides from all others.

Indeed, when you get inside a country like Morocco, with resources like these, all wrapped in the comforts expected of a B&R trip, travels will never be the same.
