Seasonal Fare: Truffle Season in Piemonte
Piemonte Walking—Of Buried Treasure and Bold Barolos
Any journey to Italy is reason to celebrate the enduring charms of great cuisine and exceptional wine. Never is there a better time to indulge your appetite and take in the land during its most bountiful time of year, which is the harvest. What makes our Piemonte Walking trip during mid-October especially memorable is that you’ll have the chance to unearth something truly elusive. In fact, it’s downright underground, as we spend some time in search of the region’s famed white truffles (tartufi bianchi).
Led by our licensed truffle hunter (trifulao) Beppe and his dog Diana through groves of hazelnut (dogs are preferred to pigs here), we endeavour to find what some call ‘the white gold of Alba’. Distinct from the common French truffle and more challenging to locate, we can’t promise that we’ll find any of these treasures, but we will certainly taste some during our journey, perhaps as the traditionalists prefer: delicately shaved over an egg, served sunny-side up. As luck would have it, we happen to be in Alba during their annual truffle festival.
This is just one of the highlights of an itinerary that explores this breathtaking region in Italy’s northwest. With the Alps looming in the distance, our walks traverse a variety of landscapes – along winding forest footpaths, through fertile farm fields, down into steep, sandy canyons, and through lush vineyards. Naturally, we stop along the way to get better acquainted with the wonders of local varietals, especially the renowned Barolo which we enjoy by visiting the cantinas where the wine is produced.
En route, our accommodations include a local wine estate (Villa Tiboldi), a Relais & Chateaux property that is a converted convent (Relais San Maurizio), and the stylishly contemporary Villa d' Amelia. All provide the full complement of comforts when unwinding after our daily walks. Add to that cooking demonstrations, visits with local experts, and even some Michelin-starred dining, and the prospect of rooting around the forests of Italy for truffles perfectly epitomizes the many treasures to be found in Piemonte—simply by getting a bit off the beaten track.
