Butterfield & Robinson's trips with ships
What if you could have all the advantages of travel by ship, without the cruise? What if you could explore ports and coves accessible only by water, without sharing them with five decks of tourists? What if you could laugh, dance, eat and learn from the villagers gathered at the local taverna, and not avoid the buffet table?
Our floating boutique hotels can moor in the tiniest island ports and navigate waters that larger vessels can't touch. Once you’re there, go ashore each day for biking, hiking, or strolling through port villages—or simply chill out on the deck. Your choice.
Anita Dubose and Tom Peck
Black Sea 2009
“This was our sixth B&R trip, but the first on the Callisto. This ship is great, with prefect staff, good food, and nice cabins. We had some magical moments: sailing at sunset on a perfectly smooth sea with dolphins jumping next to the boat.”

Think of them as floating hotels
In naval speak, “small ship” means 300 passengers. We think 30 is a far better size. Our ships run the gamut from intimate luxury to lavish and spacious, but they have a few things in common. They’re the finest small ships in the regions they sail. They enable us to travel in serious style, with an intimacy that’s all B&R. And they can slip into tiny ports and navigate waters that larger vessels can’t touch. So your floating boutique hotel might be anchored just a short stroll (or swim) from the cliffside village or secluded beach you discovered that afternoon.
Kaya Guneri V
A spacious six-cabined ship, our traditional Turkish gulet the Kaya Guneri V promises state-of-the-art comfort. She’s nimble enough to cozy up to hard-to-reach spots no one else can get to, and with the right winds, she powers under sail. The gulet is equipped with a high-speed Zodiac to taxi us efficiently ashore in smaller ports. See the Kaya Guneri V in greater detail.
Isabela II
She’s the finest ship in the Galapagos. She comes fully loaded with an attentive crew, a chef with an Ecuadorian twist, leading naturalists, a library, a Jacuzzi, three Zodiacs, and a glass-bottomed boat. Her sun deck is the ideal place to lounge with a book or drink and recall all the interesting locals you met that day—four-legged, feathered or flippered! See the Isabela II in greater detail.
Nostra Vita
A spacious five-cabin traditional Turkish gulet ship, provides state-of-the-art comfort. She's nimble enough to cozy up to hard-to-reach spots no one else can get to, and with the right winds, she powers under sail—you'll experience real beauty in motion! See the Nostra Vita in greater detail.

 Travelling By Sea with B&R
Here are some typical questions we receive about our ship-based trips. If there is something not addressed here, please call a Travel Advisor at 1-866-551-9090.
1. Are there separate washrooms in each cabin? Do I have my own bathroom?
Each cabin has private shower cubicle and toilet facilities.
On the Kaya Guneri V (Turquoise Coast Walking), the master cabins have massage showers.
2. What are the cabins like (size, windows, etc.)?
Aboard the Kaya Guneri V, Turquoise Coast Walking:
There are 2 master cabins, 1 forward, 1 aft, 1 deluxe double and 1 deluxe twin.
The cabin dimensions are as follows:
Master cabin - 18 m2/194 sq ft.
Aft master cabin - 24 m2/258 sq ft.
Double and single cabin on Fore: 9.3 m2/101 sq ft.
Double and single cabins on Aft: 9.3 m2/101 sq ft.
(Pls note that the height of the cabins differs from 6.8 to 7.8 ft.)
All cabins have port holes and the aft master has two windows looking out.
Each of the cabins have independently controlled air conditioning.
Aboard the Nostra Vita, Dalmatian Coast Biking:
There are 2 master cabins, 1 forward, 1 aft, 2 double cabins and 1 twin cabin.
The cabin dimensions are as follows:
Master cabin on the prow – 24 m2/258 sq ft.
Master cabin on the stern – 23.2 m2/250 sq ft.
Double cabins – each 11 m2/118 sq ft.
Twin cabin – 11.2 m2/121 sq ft.
3. Will I get seasick? How much does the ship rock back and forth?
There is always the possibility of seasickness. As our trips are on smaller ships, you may feel the motion of the ocean more so than on a large cruise ship, for example. Typically, seasickness is felt most acutely below deck, therefore we anchor the boats at night to allow you a pleasant and peaceful sleep. On several mornings, we will start the engines early in order to arrive at our next hiking or biking destination just as we finish our breakfast. This is a beautiful time to enjoy an early morning coffee on deck and to take in the stunning views at the bow. If you are someone who gets motion sick easily, you can purchase sea sickness bracelets and medication at many of your local drugstores.
4. Is the motor loud?
The engines make a rumble, but not so much that it interferes with sleep. Nonetheless, on the mornings that we do start the engines early, we encourage you to bring earplugs if you are a particularly light sleeper.
5. Why is are their different prices for each cabin?
They differ in size, bed layouts, windows and location on each ship.
6. How much luggage can I bring?
Pack in collapsible canvas bags or soft-sided luggage. Space in the cabins is obviously limited, and bags which can be stored under beds or in cupboards leave a lot more room for you to move about. However, although we spend most of the trip on the gulets, there is a certain amount of moving before we get on board, not to mention any travelling you may be doing before or after your trip. So while we recommend foldable luggage for the sake of conserving space on the boat, you will want to ensure that it is strong and reliable.
7. Are there stairs on the ships that I have to climb up and down?
Yes, there are steps from the deck to the cabins below. There is a ramp used to board the boat and a ladder used to access the Zodiacs and other aquatic activities. The crew is extremely particular about ensuring that all parts of the boat are kept dry to avoid slipping hazards.
8. Do we sail at night or stay in port?
Sailing is done mostly in the early morning, which allows for a peaceful sleep and gives us the majority of the day to explore and relax.
9. When are we anchored vs. docked?
On all of our ship-based trips, there is a combination of evenings where we anchor in small coves and dock in small ports. The evenings where we anchor in remote coves, dinner is enjoyed on board. When we dock in small ports along the way, dinners are enjoyed at local restaurants on land.
10. Is there Internet access? Is it expensive?
The Nostra Vita on our Dalmatian Coast Biking trip has a computer with internet connection and it is free of charge.
The Kaya Guneri V on our Turquoise Coast Walking trip has wireless internet access on board (max. 6 computers at a time) and there is no extra charge for this service.
11. If I have an early return flight will the boat be able to return and dock in time?
Turquoise Coast
The boat will dock in Gocek on drop off day and then we take a flight back to Istanbul. You will arrive at the airport at approximately 11:00am.
Dalmatian Coast
We return you to Dubrovnik or Split (depending on your itinerary) just after breakfast. Both ports offer plenty of daily outbound flights to other European hubs.
